Breast cancer is one condition that has been plaguing humanity for as long as anyone can remember. Over the past few years, the affected have been steadily increasing and as of the moment is predicted to claim up to 45,000 patients will die before the year is over. In its earlier stages this cancer can be difficult to determine. Of all the symptoms that it manifests, the development of a lump or cyst in the chest area is probably one that is most telling of the condition.
Other symptoms associated with the disease are often very subtle that even with frequent self-checks it can still be missed. To make matters worse, the symptoms associated with this type of cancer may even go in hiding only manifesting once the cancer is already in its later stages of development or has metastasized into other vital areas of the body.
Lumps or masses in the breast are nothing unusual and most of them aren't cancerous. Some of these harmless breast masses can be easily felt by individuals when conducting a self check. But there is no way to know for sure whether the lump is cancerous or not unless otherwise a professionally assisted check-up is done. The only way individuals will be able to effectively tell when the lump is indeed cancerous is when it starts to change in size, shape and starts to cause discoloration of the skin in the surrounding areas. The only problem with this is the fact that when it does reach this stage of breast cancer might already be too late for precautionary or subtle measures of treatment.
This is the reason why women are advised to undergo professional physical examinations at least once a year, in order to catch cancerous cells in its developing stages in order to eliminate it using less invasive procedures and therapy.
For those dealing with advanced stages of these cancer systemic or local treatments may be advised. Radiation therapy and surgery are some examples of local treatments and are used to destroy, remove or control development of the condition. Hormonal and chemotherapy on the other hand belong to systemic treatments. These forms of treatments are targeted to control or destroy the cancer cells all over the body and prevent them from spreading. While it sounds good on paper, the problem with systemic therapy is the fact that it is a generalized approach to the problem, meaning that the treatment may also destroy other cells inside the body which can help suppress the condition from spreading should the treatment fail.
Breast cancer is a very debilitating and even fatal disease once it goes unchecked. It can affect both men and women and can go for years without showing any signs or symptoms. Prevention is one of the best ways that it can be stopped and to do this, you'll need to have yourself checked regularly as well as keep yourself fully informed about this dreadful condition.
