If you are considering entering the world of plastic surgery, you will be happy to know that most patients who have cosmetic procedures are quite happy with their results. Skilled surgeons can make minor changes to create a huge difference in your overall appearance. With that said, before you decide to go under the knife, you should carefully consider whether or not you are, indeed, ready for this life changing step.

First, decide what your motivations are for your procedure. Do you want to change your body so you look like someone else? This isn't likely to happen, even with the most skilled surgeon. You are who you are, and no amount of plastic surgery is going to change that. Similarly, if you are trying to make changes to improve someone else's view of you, remember that you are not going to change their minds about you simply because your appearance is slightly altered.

On the other hand, if you are turning to a doctor's skill because of a small imperfection or a cosmetic flaw that causes pain or discomfort, both physically and emotionally, then you are probably ready. Sometimes small changes make a huge difference in your level of self-confidence.

Next, think about the timing of your plastic surgery. Do you have a few weeks you can take off of work? If so, then the timing may be right. You will want to give your body time to heal and time for the bruising and swelling to fade before you jump back into work. Do you have people around you who can help you? The day after your procedure you will likely need some extra help, so call up some friends or relatives. Are your children old enough to take care of some of their day-to-day needs, or do you have someone who can help with them? Depending on the procedure you are considering, you may not have the ability to lift children and cook meals for a few days after your procedure.

Finally, consider your expectations, and talk them over with your doctor. There are certain things about your appearance that will not change after plastic surgery, and you need to understand the limits.

If you have realistic expectations about what plastic surgery can and cannot do, are in a good psychological position, and have the time set aside to devote to healing after your procedure, you are ready to take the next step and sign up for the procedure of your choice.
