Many people assume that cosmetic dental care is only for celebrities. This assumption could not be further from the truth. New advances in dental science, along with the development of new tools and technology, have now made the most sophisticated dental treatments available to virtually anyone willing to visit a dentist. These new developments in science have also improved the comfort levels of patients, making many forms of cosmetic dental care painless in comparison to the primitive techniques of the past. In the areas of appearance, health, and overall tooth performance, cosmetic dentists deliver a comprehensive overall improvement in the quality of life for each and every one of their patients, no matter how severe the case may be.

Cosmetic dental care is focused first and foremost on restoring the appearance of the human smile. There are many things that can go wrong with teeth that can diminish the way they look. Teeth can become discolored, going from a natural white to a yellow or brown color. A tooth can develop small pits after years of chewing. Sometimes too, people with sleep disorders suffer from Bruxism, a tendency to grind their teeth while sleeping and either wear away enamel or grind teeth down to the dentin layer. Depending on the degree of damage, and whether or not there is a concomitant infection in the tooth, there are a number of cosmetic dental care procedures that professionals use to whiten teeth and restore their original shape. Procedures such as tooth whitening, cosmetic dental bonding, and porcelain veneers can whiten and reshape teeth painlessly, and with lasting results. Porcelain crowns can cover broken or badly decayed teeth and fool everything from the face in the mirror to close relatives, and dental implants can sometimes look and work better than the teeth they replace.

While focusing a great deal of attention on restoring the color and proper shape of teeth, cosmetic dental care is equally devoted to restoring tooth health. Veneers, for example, prevent small cracks from developing into larger ones. Cosmetic dental bonding can be used to replace amalgam fillings and provide a better cavity prevention strategy than metals which really do not belong in the mouth to begin with. Dental crowns are often placed on teeth that have been saved with a root canal. Once the infection is removed, the tooth is sealed and protected against further incursions from bacteria. Techniques such as LANAP allow advanced periodontal disease, once a painful condition that could only be remedied by painful gum surgery, to now be treated comfortably and much more effectively through the use of laser technology. Because of these new medical advances, many now feel that cosmetic dentistry is the only way to go.

This is because, at the end of the day, we need our teeth for more than simply looking attractive to others. We need them to work and to last. While making sure that tooth decay is stopped and tooth appearance is improved, cosmetic dental care procedures also must ensure that tooth loss is proactively prevented and that a person can eat or drink comfortably without pain, discomfort, or inconvenience. This is one of the reasons why so much research, development, and training have gone into the development of procedures such as LANAP, composite bonding, porcelain veneers and crowns, and titanium alloy implants. It is imperative that every patient be able to walk away from the dental chair and experience a genuine change for the better. Cosmetic dentists consider their greatest successes in cosmetic dental care to be those case histories that involve people who return to their office and report that they frequently forget they are wearing a veneer, a crown, or even a full dental implant. Nothing makes a cosmetic dentist happier than to hear stories like this.

As new technology continues to emerge, and cosmetic dentists continue to fine-tune their precision skills, the future for this exciting medical discipline looks as bright as the award-winning smiles it produces.
