We live in an age when many Americans are overweight or obese, so it is no wonder that we are constantly hearing about how important it is to eat right. When it comes to our own lives, however, we tend to make more than a few justifications for poor eating habits. I would venture to guess that at no time is that truer than during pregnancy. Hey, we're eating for two, right?

But we forget that this is our child's earliest dose of good nutrition--or not so good--depending upon how well we manage our lifestyle during this crucial period. Plus, there are certain medical conditions, such as gestational diabetes, that may arise which need to be treated through dietary adjustments.

So how can you maintain the sort of healthy lifestyle that will lead to the best outcome for both you and your baby? Let me give you some advice.

An expectant mother's body needs higher doses of the vitamins and minerals that provide basic function of all your vital systems. Prenatal vitamins were formulated especially to meet these needs, so remember to take them throughout your pregnancy.

They will also help supplement nutritional necessities for your body when you are breastfeeding. But don't expect to survive on a supercharged multivitamin alone, now or later!

After the opening month and a half of your pregnancy, you will probably experience nausea and vomiting. For some women, this is extremely intense, strikes every day, and will last for two or almost three months.

If you are one of those women, then you should be selecting foods that are NOT nutrient rich and that you don't particularly enjoy. Why, you ask? Food aversion! After cancer patients finish a round of chemotherapy, they are usually very sick, and psychologically, they associate the sickness with the food they ate before treatment. Expectant mothers sometimes go through something similar.

If they had, for example, eggs, hash browns, and toast, they will avoid these foods for a long time. You don't want to have the same thing happen to you during a time when you need to have plenty of nutrition when your pregnancy becomes more stable.

It may be wise to hire a Chicago dietician to help you through the course of your pregnancy, especially if you have developed gestational diabetes, which can cause a slew of other health implications for you and your baby later on.

They can recommend any additional supplements you should take on top of your prenatals and help you plan meals effectively to help your little one have the best development possible.

Don't forget to kick all of the unhealthy habits. Drinking and smoking are both ENTIRELY off-limits. This may take some self-control, but the prospect of delivering a healthy child at the end of the road should be incentive enough.
