Sinusitis, more commonly known as sinus infection, is a condition that plagues many individuals world wide.

Generally, the sinus flareups that many people experience are the result of an infection that has developed in your sinuses or cavities located in bones close to the nose. If swelling occurs in your sinuses due to infection, you may experiences headaches and a fever, and find it difficult to breathe, along with other problems.

The skull has a number of cavities or sinuses which contain openings through which mucus and air can flow freely. A lining of mucous membrane connects the sinuses to each other. Inflammation develops in the sinuses and their lining as a result of an infection caused by allergies or asthma. When the swelling becomes too great, mucus and air are trapped in the cavities, or a vacuum is created. Such blockages cause extreme pressure on the walls of the sinuses, which can lead to intense pain.

The sinuses are divided into four categories: frontal sinuses, ethmoid sinuses, maxillary sinuses, and sphenoid sinuses. Infection can occur in any of these four sinuses which can become especially painful.

And this means that people can get different sinusitis symptoms, according to the location of the area that is inflamed. The pain or discomfort can be felt in the vicinity of these sinuses. If your infection is in the frontal sinuses, pain may be experienced in the region of the eyes and brow; ethnoid sinuses become inflamed between the eyes and the bridge of the nose; the maxillary sinuses cause discomfort in the cheekbone; and sphenoid sinuses are a source of pain behind the eyes and in the upper nose area. People who have sinusitis typically report pain in these areas.

There are several other symptoms typically resulting from sinus infections, including early morning headaches; generalized pain in the head, ears and neck; discomfort in the cheeks/upper jaw/teeth; pain between the eyes; swollen eyelids; stuffy nose and nasal discharge; inability to smell; and general tenderness around the nose. In some cases sinusitis can result in fever, fatigue, a runny nose and a bad cough. If you think you are experiencing the symptoms of sinusitis, tap the tender areas with your fingertips to determine if the problem is sinus-related. In some rare situations, acute sinusitis has caused certain serious medical conditions, including infection of the brain.

People seeking pharmaceutical ways to fight off the pain of a sinus headache may try over-the-counter pain killers and decongestants. You can buy these types of medicine in both tablet form and sprays.

However there are also many people who have found relief from home remedies such as jalapeno peppers, hot/cold compresses, ripe grape juice, and more. The worst symptoms of sinusitis can be alleviated with these home remedies. However, for those with chronic or acute forms of the condition, a specialist should be consulted to get the proper treatment.
