When I was 18, I was in the best shape of my life. Whenever I was upset or bored, I hit the gym, which was pounded on top of my regular workout routine that included at least three sessions each week.

Now I hardly have the time or energy for two workouts every week, and when I am at the gym, I can hardly decide what to do after I finish up on the treadmill or bike. This makes each session erratic, so it's no wonder I'm not getting the results I want. If you're in the same boat, then let me share with you the tips and tricks that I am learning to boost my weight loss and fat burn.

Many people avoid fitness classes or having a formal gym membership because they might do something wrong and either injure themselves or just be embarrassed in front of others that seem to be in better shape.

If you feel nervous about this, too, then you may want to start out in your living room or den. When you visit your local bookstore or warehouse store, you can find any number of fitness videos that involve Pilates, dancing, and kickboxing, among many other methods to get your heart pumping and your metabolism firing.

However, be sure to consult your doctor before beginning an exercise routine of any kind. Don't overreach your abilities, especially if it's been awhile since you were regularly engaged in aerobic exercise. If you are "feeling the burn," it should be from torching calories, not injuring your muscles.

You should be challenging yourself right from the get-go instead of starting slow and gradually working up. There are many fitness boot camp programs across the nation that can help you see real results--fast. Plus, you will be working in a group setting with people trying to make a fitness comeback, just like you, which can help you make friends and bond.

Keep your metabolism going throughout the day with simple, nutritional snacks in between meals. If you have a refrigerator in your workplace, then store fresh fruit, low-fat yogurt, or sugar-free pudding there for easy access when you need to refuel. If you have a dehydrator at home, you can easily dry fruit to keep at your desk.

Don't forget to keep hydrated. It's best to drink a lot of water an hour or two before your workout rather than during or after, as you might get sick. Learn to listen to your body and give it what it needs.
