Storing food for emergency preparedness is a wise idea, for you never know when you will be left without power or access to a grocery store. It is impossible to plan on natural disasters, so the best way to be ready for them is by setting aside a supply ahead of time that will feed you and your family for an extended period of time.

The majority of people choose to purchase bulk storage items and MREs (meals ready to eat). Most of these are dehydrated or freeze-dried meals, that when added to boiling water, create a manner in which to feed your home and give your children sustenance during hardships.

Though you can purchase heating units and sources that can boil water for these types of items, you have to depend on the quality of the water that you are using. These items can get costly, once you have to add up the prices of all the different appliances and products used to make and heat them.

Another food storage method that does not require cooking or the use of any other appliances or products is canning. You can purchase items on sale at the grocery store and preserve them ahead of time in case of emergency, or even use fruits and vegetables grown in your own home garden.

This can also be a cheaper option, especially if you use homegrown produce, because you really only need to purchase the cans and whatever kit or method you choose to seal them. The main expense that you will incur when it comes to this process is the purchasing of the jars themselves.

You want to make sure to get the type with sealable lids, for these will keep contaminants out of your produce and properly enclosed whatever you are storing within. You can find them at your local grocery store or purchase them discounted in bulk packaging online.

You might as well buy more for a lower price, because if you are going to make a habit of canning, you will definitely need more at a future date. Once you have bought them, you can decide what you wish to preserve.

Some of the best items to can are tomatoes, berries, cucumbers/pickles, beans, jam, meats, stews, and citrus fruits. If you are able to grow any of these in the climate where you live, make sure to purchase seeds and research how to do so in your own backyard!

If you are inexperienced, you may want to take a class, research online, or find someone you know that can instruct you on how to properly perform this process. Though it is simple once you know what you are doing, you want to make sure and learn the correct way first, so that you can store items without them becoming contaminated or decaying quicker than they should.

There are two different types of foods that you will can: high acid and low acid. High acid produce is very easy to pack, and is probably the most popular type to use.

Low acid items can be used with a little bit more time and preparation. Before you do either, make sure that the cans and lids you are using are properly washed and disinfected.

If they are sterile before you place anything in them, it will keep them from ruining the foods that you use. Also, keep the jars warm by placing them in heated water until you are ready to use them.

It will stop them from cracking when you fill them with hot jams, fruits, or vegetables. Once you have filled and covered the jars properly, place them in the boiling water and cover them for the amount of time that you have been instructed.

This will seal the lids and kill any bacteria remaining inside. Low acid types, like certain vegetables, meats, poultry, and seafood, will need the use of a pressure canner to keep them from contamination.

The method is almost the same, but you will need more heat and a different type of equipment to perform the task so that they will stay good for years to come. Canning is not only useful, it is a fun hobby that will save you time and worry when it comes to caring for your family in emergencies or disasters.
