When you move into a new home there are always a lot of mundane chores to check off of the to-do list. It is important that you prioritize your to-do list after moving in so that you are able to take care of the most important items of business first.

There are a lot of families that do not think about their emergency preparedness plan until they find themselves in the middle of an emergency. Do not let your family be one of these families and move this preparation to the top of your list.

First, you have to make sure that you are sitting down with your children on a regular basis to discuss what happens in a disaster. Depending on where you live you should discuss the disasters that are most prevalent in your area.

When you are discussing these issues with your children you want to make sure that you do not scare them. Trying to scare your children to make sure that they listen is not an effective way of teaching them how to deal with the emergency.

Make sure that they understand that just because you are talking about an emergency does not mean it is going to happen any time soon or ever. When they understand this they may have a better grasp on reality.

Taking the time to get to know your children's personalities is very important for this part of your discussion. When you have a very sensitive child you want to make sure that you find a way to present this information without scaring him or her.

After you have discussed what might happen around them you then need to make sure that they know what they need to do. Having a safe meeting place in your neighborhood is a great way to ensure that they are safe.

During a disaster they may not be able to get out of the house. If you are at the meeting space and your child is not there you will know that they are trapped in the house because they would not go anywhere else.

It is important that your child understands how crucial it is to get to the meeting spot. You want to make sure that the meeting spot is in an open area that is going to allow protection from the elements of the natural disaster.

When you are sitting down with your family you may also want to make emergency packs for all of the kids. This way, when there is an emergency they just have to grab a backpack and head out of the house.

This backpack should include some food to tide them over for a few days, warm clothes, warm socks and a good pair of shoes. You may also want to include a first aid kit in all of your children's packs just in case anyone gets hurt.

Packing these packs together can be a great way for your child to understand the importance of this pack. You may also want to let your child put one item from their room in the pack that they feel they would not be able to lose.

After you have taken the time to make the packs with your children, you should make sure that your food storage unit is up to par. There are a lot of women that do not understand the importance of having enough food stored away.

In our society, there are not a lot of people that are self-sufficient. More than likely, you go grocery shopping on a regular basis to make sure that you have the food you need to feed your family.

After a natural disaster it will be much more difficult to get your hands on the food that your family needs to survive. You want to make sure that you are taking the time to create a food storage unit that could potentially feed your family for a while.

This food needs to be food that is not going to perish quickly or leave you with a big mess. You want to practice cooking with the foods that you have in your food storage unit so that your children can have a well balanced meal.

Researching which types of food are going to stay best the longest is a great idea. The more you know about the food you will use to save your family the better off you will be and the better off your children will be in the long run.
