Common Weight Loss Mistakes You Should Avoid

In our culture, we are constantly bombarded with messages and images about looking slim, sleek, and toned, like the celebrities gracing the red carpet. Plus, with obesity rates on the rise, we are also constantly reading articles in magazines and on the web about the importance of dieting and exercise.

Even though all this information is at our disposal, we still tend to make mistakes in the process of getting fit and trim that will, at best, hinder our efforts or, at worst, do some serious damage to our bodies. So what common pitfalls should you avoid as you try to get your body in top condition? Let me tell you.

Low-carbohydrate diets were all the rage not too long ago, and some people are still gravitating toward them. But the truth is that the FDA recommends that our diet be comprised of 30 percent fat, 45 percent carbohydrates, and 25 percent protein. If you upset this balance too much, your body is going to be very unhappy, and you will automatically be cutting out some of the most important foods (like fruits and some vegetables).

The key is to focus on cutting down on SIMPLE carbs, like glucose and sucrose. Try to fill in that 45 percent with fiber, which will also help keep your digestive track running as it should and help clear out your colon. The combination of the slow-burning energy and the cleansing aspects of fiber can give you more energy in the long run.

Beware of diet pills of all kinds. You will often hear testimonials that claim that, "This pill (or supplement) curbed my appetite and gave me more energy than I've had in years!" That energy is usually attributed to caffeine and other stimulants, which can actually cause you to dehydrate and feel unpleasant jitters.

There's nothing wrong with an occasional caffeine buzz, but if you're depending on that to keep you going, there may be an underlying medical problem. Try adding a multivitamin and extra Vitamin B to your routine and see if that helps. If not, consult with your doctor. As for the appetite curbing? Well, you can't be downing diet pills forever, so you have to learn to control your eating habits on your own.

Many people either spring into weight loss surgery too soon, thinking it will solve their weight problem automatically, or they wait too long, afraid that a medical procedure will restrict them too much. The truth is, there are more and more options, including something known as the lap band procedure, which provides more flexibility than traditional gastric bypass.

Don't be fooled, however, that a surgery of any kind will do the work for you. It is meant to be an aide, but you have to work closely with your doctor to make sure that you can attain the results you hope for.
