A cyclone can be a very dangerous storm. There are several things you should do to prepare to survive an event like this.
There are many different disasters that could strike you family at any moment. Many of these disasters are man-made and many are disasters that result from the forces of nature.
One of the natural storms that you should prepare for is a cyclone. Cyclones are also called hurricanes and typhoons.
It is very important that you are aware of this fact in case those terms are used in announcements on the radio. You will know that the disaster coming is like a cyclone and you will know what you need to do.
Cyclones are revolving tropical storms. These storms usually have very high winds and will cause a lot of destruction in the areas that fall under their path.
Many times if the residents are not properly prepared for a cyclone it will even cause death. Anyone who lives near the ocean lives in an area threatened by a potential cyclone.
There are several things you should do to prepare yourself to make sure that you and your family will survive if a cyclone strikes. The first thing you should do is sit down with your family and make an emergency plan.
Decide where you will meet as a family. Choose a location near your home, in a neighboring town, and out of state.
Depending on various situations you may not be able to meet each other in town. You may have to leave town right away and everyone should know where they can find each other.
Children should even know this plan in case they have to leave town with a friend or school instructor. Make sure that various locations such as your child's daycare center and your work have plans for what to do during a cyclone.
If they do not have a plan you will want to help them make one. If a disaster strikes, you may save lives by providing this plan beforehand.
Be sure to think about how close to the water you are and make plans with friends and family farther in land to stay with them if your home is destroyed. After you have made the appropriate plans, you will need to put together an emergency kit for each family member.
Each emergency kit should include a change of clothes, food, water, medical supplies, and personal items that individual family members may need. A radio, extra batteries and important documents may also be very important to pack.
The food you include in the emergency pack should be non-perishable and well sealed. There are many different options you have to choose from.
Freeze dried food is the best option because it is very light, easy to prepare, and delicious. You can purchase entire meals and easily pack them in you emergency kits.
Canned food also keeps very well, but it is heavier and will be harder to move around. There are other options as well that you should look into to see which choice is the best for your family.
The general rule for how much water you should store is one gallon per person per day. It is especially important to store water as the cyclone approaches.
It is very likely that all of the fresh water will be contaminated by the storm. You will need to have enough stored to get through the time it will take for the water to become fresh again.
You will also want to protect you home from the storm as best you can by securing the doors and windows. Use masking tape or boards to cover the windows.
Try to tie down or remove all of the clutter on the outside of your home. These things could be picked up by the storm and thrown into your house.
You will prevent extra damage by taking care of these things. It is also a good idea to protect your valuables by placing them in plastic garbage bags.
The winds may break and then these things would be exposed to the wet weather. If you stay in town during the storm, stay indoors and away from the windows.
If your home begins to break apart, take shelter under a strong table or under a mattress. Be sure to stay away from broken glass and to wait for officials to announce that it is safe on the radio before you venture out.
When you do venture outside be cautious. Avoid broken glass, downed power lines, and other hazards that may cause injury or other serious consequences.
