Mudslides and landslides are very dangerous and they may threaten your family. It is important to be aware of the signs and prepare accordingly.

It is in the best interest of your family and yourself to prepare for disaster. Natural disasters are not going to be remedied like certain diseases.

They are going to be there for a long time to come and they will threaten your family. If you are not properly prepared, you or a loved may suffer injury or death.

Becoming properly prepared significantly increases your chances of not only surviving, but surviving comfortably. One of the many natural disasters that may threaten when you live would be the occurrence of a landslide or mudslide.

Landslide and mudslides are caused by heavy rains in area where the land is either unstable or not used to receiving rain. The momentum of the avalanching earth can cause a lot of destruction, but you can avoid death if you are properly prepared.

In order for the preparation you do to be effective, you must prepare before the disaster occurs. As you do not know when the disaster will occur, you must prepare before you suspect you will be in danger.

Mudslides and landslides happen extremely quickly. You will need to be able to react quickly when it happens.

First of all, you should not build or buy a home that is close to any steep slopes, mountain edges, drainage ways, or natural erosion valleys. However, you may already be past the point on this and already have a home built in one of these dangerous areas.

If you already have a home in one of these areas you may want to consider getting a ground assessment of the property. Once you find out the possible dangers located on your property, you will be able to talk to an expert in this field about anything you may able to do prevent potential mudslides and landslides that could threaten your home and your family.

It is also good protective measure to install flexible pipe fittings to pipelines to prevent gas and water leaks. This is useful in preventing landslides and in dangerous fires and explosions if your home is damaged by one.

Even though landslides happen suddenly, there are warning signs that can help you know if you are in danger. If you see major changes in your landscape such as patterns of storm-water drainage on the slopes of the nearby hills, land movement, small slides, or flows you may want to take some extra safety precautions.

Another indication that a mudslide may begin soon is if the trees on the slope continuously begin to learn further and further.

You may also experience changes in your home that may indicate a change in the land. For example, if your doors or windows stick for the first time of new cracks appear in plaster, tile, brick, or foundations you may be in danger.

You may also see outside walls, walks, or stairs begin to pull away from the building or a widening in previous crack in the ground or paved areas. Your underground utility lines may break, there may be a bulging of the ground at the base of the slope, water coming up through various areas in the ground, fences and other vertical objects beginning to lean, and you may hear a faint rumbling sound.

This rumbling sound will increase and become louder as it gets closer to when the ground will begin to shift. Other unusual sounds like trees cracking and boulders knocking together can also be a sign to leave the area.

Of course, if the ground begins to shift or move, you will need to get out of the area as quickly as possible. However, if it is too late to leave, you must curl into a tight ball and protect your head as best as you can.

It is best if you recognize the signs and have time to gather your family and their 72 hour kits and leave together. Each family member should have an emergency kit that contains food, water, medical supplies, an extra change of clothing, a radio, and other personal items.

The best kind of food to store in these emergency kits is non-perishable and well sealed. Freeze dried food is one of the best tasting types of food that falls into this category.

In the past, freeze dried food was disgusting, but many improvements have been made. Freeze dried food packets are light, easy to pack, easy to prepare and have enough variety that even the pickiest eaters can still find something they enjoy.
