Bariatric surgery has become an option for weight loss that has become quite popular over the past decade and with good reason. It can return you to a healthy weight and can reduce or eliminate many of the medical conditions that come with being obese. But to many people on the outside looking in, it may look like a miracle cure. Nothing is farther from the truth. It is all about home much you are willing to change.

For the first 9-12 months, you eating habits will be dictated to you as a result of the surgery. You will have a stomach that holds only an ounce of food at a time and the weight will drop off while that is the case. But in due time, you will be able to eat many of the things you ate in the past. Your portions will not be as large, but there is nothing that will stop you from grazing your way through the day. It will be possible for you to consume a large amount of calories in a day if you are eating mindlessly. There are many people that have had this surgery and lost the weight just to turn around and find themselves overweight again.

This medical procedure is a tool and no matter who you are you will lose weight, but reaching your goal weight and keeping your weight off will be up to you. Most preop programs include intensive education on proper nutrition and exercise. You will also be taught to recognize when you are eating emotionally and how to avoid eating out of anger, stress, loneliness and any number of other reasons we choose to eat when we are not really hungry.

This is a process and it will take time to make the necessary changes, but as long as you make smart decisions most of the time, you will be all right. Do not beat yourself up over things you know you shouldn't have done. Learn from your mistakes and move on. Learn as much as you can about living healthy and try to learn what things trigger compulsive behaviors in you and learn to deal with them or avoid them.

Gastric bypass surgery will help you lose the weight, but it is something that takes work in the long-term. The people that become motivated live healthy no matter what it takes will be the ones that are most successful at keeping their weight off.
