Signs That Something Is Amiss In Your Mouth

Our bodies can be difficult to read sometimes. A seemingly minor headache can signal the beginning of a bad bout of the flu; on the other hand, sharp abdominal pains may simply be the result of bloat and gas. That is why it is important to learn to recognize the signs of a serious difficulty before it gets out of hand.

I find this especially true when it comes to oral health. Most of us try to ignore problems, hoping they will go away on their own, but this is rarely the case. Neglect of the issue can result in receding gums, bleeding, infection, root canals, and even tooth loss. So how can you tell when you have an issue that needs treatment? Let me indicate some warning signs.

Sensitivity to hot and/or cold is not always a reliable indicator of a dental problem, but it can be. If you have developed this problem, ask yourself if you have had any recent dental work that could have induced this annoyance.

For example, many people who have braces also have their teeth "polished," meaning their teeth are shaped with a special tool wielded by a dentist or orthodontist. Polishing can expose nerve endings, causing a sudden sensitivity. People who have their teeth bleached also have this unpleasant side effect. But if this is not the case for you, it's time to call your San Clemente dentist.

Bleeding gums can have multiple causes, but they are often a symptom of infection or gum disease. If you aren't flossing regularly but venture to give it a try because something between the teeth is bothering you, you may experience bleeding gums--or you may be brushing too hard.

If neither of these issues are underlying the seepage from your pink gums, then make an appointment right away. Gum disease can lead to tooth loss!

One of the most obvious signs that something is wrong is a toothache, of course. If your wisdom teeth have erupted and are still intact, then they are particularly susceptible to infection because food particles can become trapped in the area and begin to weaken the teeth. The best remedy to this is, naturally, to have the wisdom teeth removed.

Though this procedure is sometimes expensive, most dentists will offer you a significant discount if you pay in full at the time of the surgery or will perform extractions two at a time so that you can have extra time to amass the money needed to cover the expenses. Don't forget to talk to your insurance company to see what they will cover.

These are just a few signs you should be aware of, but don't think they are the only ones you have to worry about. Learn to listen to your body, and you will know when it's time to call a professional to help you.
