Most seasoned parents know the basics on how to prevent head lice. Advice like "don't borrow someone else's comb" or "don't trade barrettes or pony tail holders" is pretty standard, and most kids just need a little reminder at back to school time. You might be surprised at some of the other ways kids can contract lice. Fortunately, there are some good natural lice treatment products out there to help.

Sharing sporting equipment like batting caps and football helmets is a common way to spread head lice. Consider using a natural lice prevention spray on your child's gear, and talk to the coach if you are concerned. If your school is having a large outbreak, they may want to spray all the helmets as a precaution.

Playgrounds are another place you can help your child prevent a head lice infestation. Head to head contact is an easy way for lice to spread, so help them understand this. For extra protection when they go back to school, use lice deterring shampoo and conditioner as part of their daily routine. Natural lice prevention is safe and chemical-free, and especially good for kids with allergies or asthma.

If your child does get head lice...

1. Don't panic! There are safe, natural and easy to use natural lice treatment products on the market that can help. First, shampoo the hair and scalp with a natural lice treatment shampoo, and follow up with a lice treatment conditioner.

2. Comb out. After shampooing and applying conditioner, use a specially designed lice removal comb to remove the nits (lice eggs). You'll see these white sticky blobs at the root of the hair. Carefully comb one section at a time, and be patient. It may take an hour or two to do a thorough job.

3. Overwhelmed? Call for help! A professional in-home lice removal team might be just what you need. They are specially trained, and armed with natural lice treatment products. They'll shampoo any infested person in your household, and leave you with suggestions for how to prevent another outbreak in your family.

Head lice are a part of life with young children. While it can be inconvenient and time consuming to deal with, it's not the end of the world. Arm yourself with a little knowledge on how to prevent head lice, and stock up on natural lice treatment products so you'll be ready if it does happen.
