When the skin becomes extremely dry the top layers of it start to shed off and flake, this is otherwise known as flaky skin. Normally an oily layer of skin prevents this from happening but in some circumstances it dries out. The skin then falls behind and cannot produce oil and moisture fast enough to keep up with what is being lost. Usually the body has no problem keeping up but sometimes you have to take a step and further protect it.

When a person is plagued by flaky skin then they are usually dealing with itchiness, inflammation and scaling on certain parts of the body. Extreme cases involve cracked skin, chapping and a feeling of the skin tightening. Because it is hard not to itch these problem areas, it is common for wounds to open which are very painful. The most affected areas are usually the legs, scalp, arms, elbows and knees. This is because the skin is more thin and exposed in these areas, than the rest of the body.

If you are suffering with this problem then you should stay away from cosmetics, especially the type with a fragrance. Cleaning agents and chemicals in other products should also be avoided. The best thing you can do is moisturize these areas as often as you can. Moisturizers work to keep the moisture in the body, where it belongs, and can help a lot in allowing your skin to heal and become normal again. If you are dealing with a severe skin condition, such as psoriasis or eczema, then you will need to speak with a dermatologist.

In the winter our skin goes through a lot of trauma and is more likely to become flaky. Our furnances work to dry out the skin and the outside air is low in humidity. This causes the skin to need additional moisture. With the necessary moisture not being present our skin is much more likely to dry out and start flaking off.

As we grow older then skin goes through changes and is more likely to become dry and flaky. Whether you are young or old, taking showers or baths often can lead to dry and flaky skin. Harsh soaps and extremely hot water only make it worse. There are even genetic links to dried out skin. If someone in your family has suffered with this problem then you might have it to look forward to, as well.

Homeopathic remedies can help to support your skin, especially in the rough of winter. Natrium Muriaticum keeps the body's balance of water even and is important to all of our cells, especially skin cells. It has a great track record for treating most types of skin disorders. Kalium Muriaticum works to keep the blood clean and helps to eliminate waste from the body. It helps to support the skin when it is trying to detox. Trifolium Pratense is a great cleanser and is very helpful in more serious skin conditions, such as, eczema and psoriasis.
