The immune system is such an important body system but we rarely think about how important it really is. It is responsible for driving away bacteria, germs, viruses and unwanted toxins.

In the past, the main goal of medical science was to try and cure diseases once they had already taken hold. Things are different today because more and more emphasis is being placed on preventing medical conditions before they develop, by strengthening the immune system.

Making sure your immune system is working at it's best will help it to fight off unwanted invaders. There are a lot of ways that you can strengthen it so that it will be able to protect you better.

It is important to get plenty of exercise, not only to keep your immunities high, but for many other reasons, too. Try to do some type of exercise for 30 minutes a day. You don't have to do the full 30 minutes in the beginning but try to work up to it.

Diet plays a big role in keeping us healthy, as well. Eating foods that contain selenium is very important. The best available source of it is found in Brazil nuts. Tuna is also high in selenium and is probably easier to work into your diet. You should be sure to eat foods that are high in vitamin C, garlic, zinc and vitamin B6. Many of these vitamins and minerals can be covered by a good multivitamin. Try to eat yogurt at least once a day, if not twice.

Rest is also of utmost importance. If you are not sleeping enough or your sleep is low quality then your immune system is suffering immensely. It is very common to see people who are having sleep problems also suffering with physical problems. You must get the right amount of sleep, be it 7 or 8 hours, to keep your body in tip top shape.

Take care of your body and it will take care of you. Good hygiene is perhaps the easiest and most effective way to keep your immune system working effectively. To start with, make sure you wash your hands often and take plenty of showers. This will go a long way toward stopping germs from invading your body openings. Do not drink or eat after other people especially if they are sick. When you cough or sneeze then make sure that your mouth is covered.

Try to keep your mind in optimal health by practicing things like yoga or meditation. The reason for this is that stress can really tax the immune system. Depression and anxiety will also run your body down in no time flat. If you are dealing with serious emotional or mental problems then you should seek the help of a psychologist without delay.
