When you are choosing how you want to exercise you have to make sure that you are considerate of your body. You may have some problems with your body that will inhibit the way that you are able to exercise.

Being respectful of your body when you are exercising may seem like a strange concept. There are some workouts that are very hard on your body and if you are going to participate you have to make sure that your body is equipped to handle the stress.

Surprisingly, running is one of these high stress types of exercise. When you are taking the time to get your body active you have to make sure that you are not doing more harm than good to your body in the long run.

There are a lot of people that think running is the best way to go when they want to increase their fitness level. Although running is a great way to go, some people's bodies cannot handle the stress that this type of workout puts on their joints.

Running is very hard on the joints in your legs. When you are running on hard surfaces your feet are continuously striking against the ground with force coming from all of your body weight you can do some pretty serious wear and tear to your body.

Your ankles may be the first joint that is affected. Although you probably will not notice the degeneration of your ankles in the beginning you may start to notice it after you have been running consistently for a long time.

After your ankles you may start to feel the pain or discomfort in your knees. As you are taking the time to keep your knees healthy you should try to run on softer materials so that they are not put through so much stress.

There are a lot of people that do not understand how important it is to take the time to think about their body before they work out. If you realize that running is doing some damage to your body you may want to start looking for alternative workouts.

One of the most popular workouts that runners will switch to is working out on an elliptical. When you make this switch you will still be standing and moving your legs and your arms but you will not be striking your foot against the ground.

When you are on an elliptical and you are used to running you have to make sure that you challenge yourself. Sometimes, it can be easy to slack off when you are on an elliptical because you are used to the feeling of running.

Although the elliptical does feel different you can push yourself just as hard when you are on an elliptical. There are a lot of people that do not believe they will be able to push themselves so they just give up before they even get on the machine.

Adjusting the settings on the machine to ensure your workout is beneficial is often mandatory. There are different settings and workouts on the machine that you may want to take the time to take the time to experiment.

No matter the setting you end up using, you should make sure that you are getting your heart rate to the proper zone. When you are able to increase your heart rate and keep it at a steady level you will ensure that your body is working enough to sustain a good workout.

Increasing the incline and the resistance on the machine is a great way to increase your heart rate. Utilizing these types of settings on the elliptical is important and you may not even need to follow a specific workout plan.

When you get on the machine you should take the time to focus on some goals that you have set for yourself. For many runner it is easy to get bored when they are on the elliptical because it feels so much different than running.

If you find yourself getting bored with the elliptical you can always try to use some outside stimuli to keep yourself going. Some people find that the best way for them to stay motivated when they are on the machine is to read or even to watch television.

For some runners, working out on an elliptical is not enjoyable and will never be enjoyable. If you are a runner and you feel that your body needs a break make sure that you find a way to continue exercising without hurting your joints.
