Tumescent is a modern type of liposuction that has emerged as a popular trend within this day and age. It carries some benefits over other techniques such as preventing the loss of blood and other body fluids and is also less invasive and thus reduces the acquisition of secondary infections. The recovery period is also significantly shorter and discomfort is reduced due to the application of anesthesia. Sedation is no longer required to cease the occurrence of pain.

However, in addition to the above advantages, tumescent liposuction also contains severe risks. The surgical procedure have resulted in some death situations caused by a significant slowing of the heart rate otherwise known as bradycardia, pulmonary edema associated with the accumulation of fluids within the lungs or the development of a blood clot in the lung (pulmonary thromboembolism) which can prevent the flow of blood to the heart and to other vital organs. However, these cases are rare in comparison to the numerous successful uncomplicated procedures performed.

In most cases, people who undergo tumescent liposuction completely recover within a very short period of time, usually as early as a week to continue with their daily life. Immediately following the procedure, patients can perform light activities and more intense tasks after several days. However, the surgery may leave the individual with inconsistencies of the skin. This includes a loss of firmness and the presence of stretch marks in the areas where liposuction had been performed. Infections may also develop as bacteria can gain access to the abraded tissue where the needle was inserted. These risks are uncommon and if they do occur, normally they subside within a short period of time.

The sole advantage of tumescent liposuction is a slimmer region where excess fat was once present and this effect is instant following the procedure. However, the permanent form of the area will not appear until one and half months later when the underlying tissue and overlying skin has fully developed. Commonly, the individual also experiences a reduction of two to four clothe sizes, but this depends on the region in which the liposuction was performed and the original structure of the body. The ultimate outcome of tumescent liposuction is permanent I.e. excess fat will not accumulate within that region again. However, if an unhealthy diet and a lack of exercise are observed, then the region where liposuction was carried out tends to bulge out.

The purpose of tumescent liposuction is to cosmetically trim the appearance of a body region. It should only be performed if all other alternatives to reduce fat fail. Like with other surgical procedures, there are risks involved, including the occurrence of death. Therefore, the cons and pros of the procedure should be carefully weighed up before tumescent liposuction is sought.
