Food storage reserves are often filled with lots of starches and carbohydrates, due to the difficulty in preserving fresh produce and meats. Storing foods that will also give you vitamins and nutrients can be easily done.

It is extremely important to have an emergency ration of food, water, and supplies, just in case you were ever to come upon a natural disaster, unemployment, war, or famine. Though it is hard to believe that these types of situations will happen to you, they very often do, and many are not ready for them.

There are many different companies and businesses whose mission is to prepare families for whatever may come. They offer a number of different dehydrated, freeze-dried, canned, and bulk food items.

Most of these meals are full of grains and starches to give sustenance. Though these items are very important to the body and must be included in meals, as well, it is sometimes hard on your system to rely just on them for nourishment.

Therefore, it is important to also include some healthier and more vitamin-filled options within your reserve. There are many different ways that this can be accomplished.

A number of dehydrated and freeze-dried meals have a good balance of nutrients, taste, and the ability to make you feel full. Some of these are a little bit pricier, due to their packaging and the process that it takes to prepare and preserve them, but if you are looking for variety in your supply, they are well worth it.

Freeze-dried meals are especially delicious; the preservation process allows almost all of the flavors and nutrients originally present in the food to remain. This meal type is vacuum packaged and, manufacturers promise that they can last twenty-five years.

This long term option is great to have around, both for safety's sake and for when you need a quick meal with little preparation. MREs, or meals ready to eat, can be taken camping or on trips, because cooking them only requires the packaging that they come in and some boiling water.

If you are hoping to create a storage supply without spending too much money, you can alternate between bulk grains, starches, and MREs. Large buckets of dried and safeguarded product are usually cheaper in the long run than the smaller freeze-dried meal options, but may require more cooking and preparation.

Alternating between these two types will give you and your family variety and allow you to get protein and vitamins from meats and vegetables. Another way that you can incorporate healthier options into your reserve is through the process of canning.

Canning is a method of cooking and preserving produce, stews, meats, and jams in jars that can be stored in a pantry or closet for long periods of time. This is a great option, because it offers easy preparation and fresher products.
