Preventing Sport Injuries

Sport injuries are caused by a number of reasons. However, most people suffer from sport injuries because of inadequate or inconsistent training. Sport injuries affect all people, irrespective of age. Take all the right precautions and you can avoid sport injuries.

Always warm up before engaging in any physical activity
It is wrong to think that you will get in shape by just playing the sport. You might have seen several sports-persons warming-up before undertaking any activity. An effective warm-up will prepare your body for the physical activity ahead. It provides your muscles with greater blood. It decreases the muscle stiffness, and in doing so, it lowers the risk of injury and improves your performance. Jogging for 15 to 20 minutes is a good warm-up exercise.

Ensure that you are in the best condition to play the sport
It is foolish to participate in a sport if you have an injury or are tired. Instead of improving your fitness, you will only be putting yourself in danger. You need to listen to your body. It provides you with warning signs like joint pain, tenderness, swelling and numbness. When you recognize these signs, your immediate goal should be the prevention of further damage. Stop your activity immediately and consult a physician.

Arm yourself with the appropriate equipment and gear
Helmets, gloves and protective pads do not make you a sissy. They are designed to protect you from any harm or injury. Whether you play rugby or cricket, always utilize your safety gear. They will protect your teeth, knees, eyes and head. Without them, you put yourself in harm's way.

Play by the rules
Always abide by the rules of the game. They are designed to protect you and prevent any sport injuries. The rules of the game are a lot like traffic signals. Collisions and accidents are avoided since the drivers know, and follow, the rules. Sports are no different. When you are aware of the rules, you know what is legal and what is not. At the same time, you also know what to expect from the other players.

Water - The elixir of life
High-intensity sports make you sweat a lot. As a result, your body loses a lot of water and you become vulnerable to dehydration and heat illnesses. Staying hydrated should be your top priority when you train or play sports. Drink plenty of water and avoid direct sunlight to prevent dehydration and heat exhaustion.

Cooling down - Just as important as warming up
Once you finish training or playing, it is important to cool down, or warm down. Cooling down helps your body make the transition from an exertional state to a relaxed or resting state. Cooling down exercises, like a low-intensity walk or jog, remove the lactic acid from your body. This prevents cramps and stiffness.

Have plenty of rest
Many people harbor a misconception that you will get better results if you train continuously. This is far from the truth. In fact, athletes who train continuously suffer from more injuries. Rest is a vital aspect of any exercise routine. It helps you to recover from sport injuries and makes you stronger. Your training routine should incorporate adequate amounts of rest for the best results.

If you still experience pain from exercise or playing sports, even after taking all the precautions, it is advisable to see your doctor. Act immediately to stop the pain from turning into a chronic problem. In the event of sustaining a sport injury, take adequate rest before resuming your routine.
