Anxiety disorder does not refer to one type of problem but to many such as: generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), social anxiety disorder and post traumatic stress disorder.

Nobody goes through their life without dealing with feeling anxious, at least once. Things that can make one feel anxious are social problems at work, facing a difficult decision or before taking an important test. These are all examples of typical situations and they are much different than an actual anxiety disorder. The symptoms can be so severe that it can become difficult for an individual to lead a normal life.

Do not let anyone tell you different, an anxiety disorder is a very serious mental condition that should be addressed by professional help. If you feel more comfortable starting at your family doctor then that is fine but in the end you will likely end up talking to a psychiatrist.

Not everyone deals with the exact same symptoms but I will give you some of the most common: Feelings of panic, dizziness, feelings of fear, muscle tension, feelings of uneasiness, nausea, obsessive thoughts, tingly hands or feet, flashbacks of past horrific events, dry mouth, nightmares, inability to sit still, ritualistic behavior (like repeatedly brushing teeth), palpitations, trouble sleeping, shortness of breath and cold/sweaty hands or feet.

Scientists have not yet discovered exactly why people suffer with these types of disorders but it is not because a person is personally weak, flawed in character or were not raised correctly. The more that scientists learn the more sure they are that causes are mainly due to changing brain chemistry and environmental stressors.

Not everyone is fortunate enough to have all the chemicals in their brain perfectly balanced. A person who has undergone severe stress for a long period of time is likely to show a change in their brain chemicals which are responsible for controlling their mood.

Unfortunately, anxiety disorders tend to run in families. They can be inherited from one parent, or both of them. Many times, they will appear as a result of something terrible or traumatic happening to a person who already has a family history of the mental illness.

There are more people with this mental illness than you might think. In America, approximately nineteen million adults are afflicted with it. Women, for some reason, are slightly more likely to suffer with them than men. Race does not play any factor, at all.
