Being dehydrated on the job has a number of effects on personnel. When the body is affected, physical endurance and strength are compromised. This affects performance and mental alertness. Hydration packs keep anyone trekking through the great outdoors or laying low on covert missions well hydrated.

Purpose
Hands-free hydration is important when the person wearing a pack cannot set down what he is holding on to and carrying it in one hand is not wise. In an alert or defensive situation, access to water is important. Weapons, for example, should not be set aside to take a drink. The typical hydration pack has a drinking system with an easily accessible hands-free valve.

Considerations
When selecting a hydration pack, consider how long the mission is expected to last and whether weight will be an issue over water availability. A 40-oz pack is much lighter than the 100-oz. However, when exertion and weather play an important role, the availability of larger quantities of water might be more important. What type of refilling adaptor to choose is another option. Some are made specifically for tap use, while others are designed for bottles. A few types allow both.

Effects
Dehydration affects the body in a number of ways. A person can be in the early stages of dehydration and not realize it. When someone is feeling thirsty, the process has already begun. Dehydration is a direct result of the body losing and using more water than it is taking in. Symptoms of dehydration include inability to sweat or make tears, dry mouth, cramping muscles and nauseous stomach. More severe dehydration can lead to headaches, vomiting, confusion and weakness. The most extreme cases of dehydration may result in a coma or even death.

Features
Different hydration packs have various features available to meet mission or even recreational requirements. Mesh shoulder straps ensure proper ventilation to prevent overheating and additional dehydration. Most packs are available at 100 oz. capacity or 40-oz. capacity. Some models feature an external fill port, which allows the bladder to be refilled quickly and quietly when needed. Quiet zippers and waterproof or heat resistant materials are notable features as well.

Brands
There are a number of different brands on the market, such as True North Tactical and Source hydration packs. Each has different features, capabilities and price ranges. The Camelbak hydration pack, for example, is available in camouflage and black colors for those that need to be concerned about blending in to the landscape. Source offers a pack model with a 65-oz capability for those seeking a medium capacity.
