One of the most devastating and serious injuries one can have is a back injury. Unfortunately, it is also very easy to injure back if you are not careful.

There are many ways in which you can be mindful of your back however. The first thing you should do to prevent back pain and back injury is to be very careful how your lift heavy objects.

If you know that you are going to be helping a friend move or that you will need to carry something heavy in a minute, it is a very good idea to warm up and stretch. This is something that you should do if you are going to exercise you may be thinking.

Lifting is very much an exercise. Many people life weights to get stronger.

These weightlifters do not simply go at it when they arrive at the gym. They could spend a half an hour doing warm ups to get their back, leg, and arm muscles ready for the strain that they are going to be put under.

You may also notice that weight lifters are slow and methodical about lifting. They do not rush through a set of ten and then continue on to a different type of weight lifting.

They understand that trying to weight lift in a fast and hurried manner can be very dangerous. Likewise, when you are lifting heavy boxes or objects, you should move slowly, carefully, and smoothly.

Abrupt movements may not only result in you dropping the box, but it could result in the moment of the box going a direction you do not intend. As a result some of your muscles will try to compensate and then they may tear.

In addition, these movements may cause you to twist in a funny manner and with the heavy weight, you could pull some muscles. It is also much easier on your muscles if you hold an object close to your body rather than far away.

Another thing that weight lifters do to prevent injury is lift the weight with their legs instead of bending over to pick it up. By lifting with your legs, you will put much less strain on your back muscles.

As your leg muscles are probably stronger, they will be able to deal with the weight when the weight would damage your back muscles. In order to lift with your legs, you must squat down to grab the heavy object instead of bending at the waist.

If you have had previous back problems, you may want to wear a back belt. Back belts can add support when you have to lift heavy objects.

However, if you have had back problems before you will probably want to avoid lifting heavy objects at all. In addition, back belts have not been proven to prevent back pain even though they may seem to provide support.

There is also a tendency for people who wear back belts to feel invincible. As a result they are not as careful as they should be or they lift too much weight and they damage their back.

If you decide to wear a back belt, be very careful that you do not do more than you can handle. This is true even if you are not wearing a back belt.

Once you have had back pain, it can come back more easily. You want to prevent developing back pain the first time if you can.

Do not be afraid to ask for help in lifting something. Even if you feel like your ego is being wounded, it is much better that your ego is wounded that you develop back pain.

Often when you have hurt your back there is little that can be done for you besides surgery if it is appropriate. If you are helping someone move, be sure that you stretch before you help them unload if you are going to do so.

Sometimes people help load the truck, then drive over to the new location. Then, an hour passes while decisions are being made about where to put things or while you are waiting for the truck to get there.

By the time that it arrives, your muscles are cold again. If you forget to stretch again, it could have serious consequences.

If you are moving an object across the floor make sure you push it instead of pulling it. Pulling an object puts more strain on your back muscles and puts you at more risk for injury.
