What is a respite care? This is actually a temporary condition which applies to a regular carer of an aged person. We love our elderly parents and much that we want to be with them every minute of the day, we also get exhausted. And there are times when we have to attend to some other important duties other than caring for the senior in our homes. Respite care will enable us to have a break to rest and even to re-charge.

There are many different health home care establishments that have been functional for this type of need. They are not only concerned on providing permanent care for the seniors. There are those that include in their line of service a kind of temporary relief to the carer. Each health care provider has different ways of providing the respite care.

There are two general types that are usually delivered. The first is the center-based and the second is the home-based. There are many options for the duration of the service. Many of which are tailor-made to the needs of the assigned permanent carer. It can be days, weeks or months.

By center-based, we understand that the client-patient will be sent to the center and looking after this patient will be undertaken by personnel in the center. There is further choice - will the respite service be rendered during the day or would it be an overnight package. Whatever is the need, caretakers from the center are trained and experienced. Thus, you are sure that when the patient is brought to the center while the permanent caregiver is in respite, the patient will be under a specialized care-taking model. The center has adequate facilities and enough trained personnel. The patient will be exposed to the other patients in the center and everybody can interact, mingle and socialize.

However, bringing them to the center crates alienation. The senior patient does not know the people in the center and if he or she does not favor social interaction, the center can be a place of distress - different people, different room and different beds.

The other type of respite care is the home-based. Under this model, the patient stays at home and a reliever goes to the house of the would-be patient. The advantage of this model is the personal happiness of the elderly for not being uprooted from his or usual environment. This means there is no change in the surroundings. The change is only on the person providing company to this senior parent.

The caregiver will conduct a type of service tailored to the needs of the patient. There is no much problem if the senior parent is still mobile but when bed-ridden, a more expert caretaker will be dispatched by the home healthcare agency. This service provider will adjust the services to the daily routine of the patient.

This scheme, as it is personalized and individually designed, is more expensive than the group-based type. Because of the higher cost, this may have an impact on the original care-takers length of respite. The temporary handling from the healthcare service can be shorter because of price constraints.

In choosing which of the two respite types will be given to the aged parent, one must weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each. The choice can be dependent upon two factors - the model that will be preferred by the patient and the model that is within the affordability of the patient's family.
