There are a lot of families across the United States that waste a lot of money on rotten food each year. This article shows how you can start saving money on the groceries that you buy.

When you bring your groceries home you need to make sure that you understand how you are going to keep your food fresh. As you go shopping you have to recognize and utilize ways to ensure you are buying food that is fresh and will store well.

When you are buying fruits and vegetables you should always try to buy them in season. When you buy these items during their season you will be ensuring that they are going to have the best possible flavor.

There are some fruits and vegetables that will ripen if you leave them out in your home. Some vegetables, such as berries, cherries and watermelons will not ripen no matter how long they sit out in your kitchen.

This means that you have to make sure you buy these products when they are ready to eat. When you buy them too early they will never be able to ripen to the point that you will be able to eat and enjoy them.

When you buy chicken you want to make sure that the skin is the proper color. It should be the white color that you are used to seeing on raw chicken and if you feel that the color is not what it should be, do not purchase it.

When the skin starts to get slimy or oily you may also have a chicken on your hands that you do not want to purchase. If you are at all skeptical about the chicken do not purchase it or try to justify how it might be okay.

When you are buying beef and lamb you should also be careful. The beef should be a vibrant cherry red color while the lamb while not have this vibrant color, but it will instead be a paler pink color.

When the meat starts to turn brown it is fair to surmise that it has been sitting out for far too long. To prevent this you want to make sure that you are using or freezing your ground beef within a day of purchasing it.

Meats that contain whole muscles, like chicken steak or pork chops should not be kept in the refrigerator for more than three days. Once they have been there for three days you will want to get rid of them.

Your milk is another food that you will want to make sure you pay attention to when you are buying. The expiration date should not be any less than four days away and while it is in the refrigerator in your home it should last about a week.

The eggs that you purchase will stay the freshest in their carton. Many people like to put them in the refrigerator not realizing that this will actually increase the chances the eggs will have of going bad.

Cheeses that are hard like Cheddar and Swiss can stay in the refrigerator for up to two months. The soft cheese like Brie and Muenster should only be kept in your refrigerator for five to seven days.

When you are trying to determine if something is bad, do not base your judgment solely on the expiration solely on the expiration date. This guide can lead you to keep things that are going to make you sick.

You want to smell and take a thorough look at food when it is in question. When it does not look like it is going to be fresh or when it smells rotten you want to make sure that you throw the food away immediately.

There are other products that you will have to learn how to store in your kitchen. Brown sugar can be a very frustrating ingredient to store because it often times becomes hard and brittle when it is put into a cupboard.

To make sure that you are keeping your brown sugar fresh you can put it into a container with a fresh apple or even a slice of bread for the night. These items will contribute moisture to the brown sugar.

If you go to take out your brown sugar and it is hard you can put it into the oven. Your oven should not be set any higher than two hundred and twenty five degrees and the brown sugar should not be kept in for more than ten minutes.

You can maximize the money that you spend grocery shopping by keeping your foods fresh. It is possible to keep the fresh food last and encourage people to eat it.
