Plastic surgery has become easier to perform and more high-tech within the past decade. The main goal of any surgeon is to alter their patient's appearance to their liking, without making it obvious that the procedure has been done.

With all of the different types of surgeries available to those interested in changing or enhancing areas of their body, there is an increasing number of advancements in the field. Operations used to be performed primarily though the use of a scalpel and some surgeons still prefer this method today.

However, a process that is already used frequently and growing in popularity is the process of electrosurgery. This subcategory requires the use of an instrument powered by a generator.

The generator or power source provides a usually high-frequency electric current that is sent through an instrument with an electrode tip. The electrode tip is then able to cut cleanly through soft tissue.

Cutting, fulgurating, coagulating, and desiccating are all actions that can be performed with the electrosurgery device. What does this instrument have to do with cosmetic procedures?

Well, the electrode tip is able to make very clean and precise incisions. It also has the power to remove small imperfections and growths.

These procedures are able to be performed with little to no scarring after the wound is completely healed. Therefore, the right electrosurgical technology can be an excellent method for use in conspicuous areas that are being altered.

Almost any individual that goes in to have some sort of plastic surgery performed does not wish for it to be obvious that they have done so once they have fully gone through the healing process. For instance, anyone wishing to have some kind of invasive surgery performed on the face is very likely to be hesitant, due to the worry that there will be visible scarring afterwards.

With recent innovations in electrosurgery, the instrument essentially vaporizes fluid within the cells causing the cell walls to burst as it cuts. This creates a clean and straight incision that is equivalent to incisions created with a scalpel.

These instruments are especially useful when individuals request cosmetic enhancements on the torso, like augmentation. Wounds in these procedures tend to bleed profusely, so the coagulation help from the electrode tip is necessary.

Electrosurgery can also be extremely beneficial when it comes to reconstructive surgery. This type tends to be more of a necessary medical process than a cosmetic one.

Some patients have to undergo restorative or reconstructive work. A couple of examples of these are where individuals have been severely burned or were involved in accidents where limbs or body parts were lost.

Surgeries performed on these patients are generally very extensive and are meant to give them a more normal appearance that allows them to feel comfortable and function well in public and in their everyday lives. A large group of reconstructive patients are those that have experienced burns.

There are usually two different phases of burn treatment. Initial treatment is called acute burn surgery and happens immediately after the individual has been affected.

The reconstructive type occurs when the original wounds have healed, and usually involves plastic procedures. Some of these include skin grafts and cosmetic treatments to the face.

Burns are some of the most painful and most difficult wounds to heal from. They require months, even years, to fully get over, and the skin in the affected regions is never the same as it once was.

The skin is usually very tough and has lost most of its elasticity, therefore, even moving limbs can be painful. Unharmed, more elastic skin from other regions of the body is used to replace regions that have severe damage.

With the increasing focus of the media on beauty and youth, plastic surgery will most likely increase in popularity and abundance. There are constant advancements being made to help make the process easier, less expensive, and more available to the masses.

Electrosurgery has had a huge effect on the way that this method of medicine is performed. It is safe to say that is has revolutionized the way the surgeons operate on and alter the human body.
