When you think of an elliptical your first thought is probably not that it is a versatile machine. There are many people that avoid this machine because they do not know how to utilize the machine and make it versatile.
Not only are these machines joint friendly but they will also allow you to get through many different workouts. The more that you understand about your elliptical and what you can get from it the better your workouts will be.
First, if you are concentrating on a cardio workout you have to make sure that you know how to get your heart beating. When your heart rate is where it should be you will have a much better cardiovascular workout.
There are a lot of people that do not push themselves hard enough to get their heart rate up to where it should be. You need to take the time to push yourself on the machine so you can improve your cardiovascular system.
As you are working on your cardio you have to make sure that you are concentrating on your strides per minute. This means that you have to make sure you know how many time your legs are going around the elliptical.
Usually the elliptical will track this number and you will be able to watch the screen on your elliptical. When you are on an elliptical and you do not have a screen that tells you this you may not be able to count the strides.
When the screen shows this you will be able to try to keep yours strides between one hundred and forty strides and one hundred and sixty strides per minute. This will keep your heart rate at a good level for your workout.
Some people prefer to organize their workout in sprints. If you feel that you are going to work out in sprints you want to make sure that you are pushing yourself up to 160 while you are sprinting through the workout.
When you get on the elliptical you may want to focus on different parts of your legs. When you are focusing on your hamstrings and your buttocks you want to make sure that you are pushing into the pedals with your heels rather than standing flat footed.
When you stand on your toes on the machine you will be working your quads and also the front of your toes. When you first start adjusting the way you stand on the pedals it can be very hard on your leg muscles.
Only stand on the different parts of the leg you want to make sure that you are only doing it for a small amount of time. There are a lot of people that push themselves too far and end up hurting the muscles in their legs.
When you want to get a full body workout in during a short amount of time you have to make sure that you are using both your arms and your legs equally. There are a lot of people that do not use their arms enough while they are on the elliptical.
The more muscles that you are able to utilize the better your workout will be. You will be able to get your heart rate into the intense zone and will get the muscles in your upper body working as hard as the muscles in your lower body.
When you are trying to focus on your core you want to make sure that you do not use your arms at all. When you do not hold onto the handles you will have to use the core to make sure that you are able to stay balanced on the machine.
You can put your hands on your hips to make sure that you are not swaying from side to side. You also have to make sure that you keep your posture in good form so that you do not hurt your lower back.
Finally, if you want to include some strength training in your workout you can always start to do squats. When you are moving backward on the elliptical push yourself into about a three quarter squat position.
Hold the squat for just twenty seconds in the beginning. Eventually you want to make sure that you are pushing yourself to be able to squat for at least a full minute while you are on the elliptical.
No matter how you choose to change your elliptical workout you must make sure that you do something.
