When you are riding a bike you will be sharing the road with the cars that are driving. You want to make sure to take the time to understand how to avoid getting hit by the cars and how to stay safe on the road.

First, the most common way to get hit and hurt by a car is by not understanding who's right away it is. You want to make sure that you understand when it is your turn to go and when it is the cars turn to go.

When you are on the right side of the road and a car is coming out of an intersection you want to make sure that you are aware of the car and the car's movements. There are two different ways that you can collide with the car.

You may pull out in front of the car and the car may slam into you. Or when the car pulls out you may not notice that the car pulls out and then run directly into the car, which can also be very painful.

When you are riding on the bike you want to make sure that you have a headlight. If you are riding at night it should be an absolute necessity and in many countries it may be required by law that you have the headlamp on when you are riding at night.

There are a lot of people that do not understand why they should be riding with a light on during the day. When you have a light put on the white setting and you have it flashing you can be much more visible to motorists.

There are new LED lights that will last you much longer than the old type of lights. The old lights ran on battery and these lights would burn out very quickly and this can be difficult to keep up on.

If you do have an older light that is running on batteries you want to make sure that you always carry more batteries with you. There are a lot of people that run out of battery while they are out riding during the night.

Second, you want to make sure that you have some type of horn that will be able to make a lot of noise. The horn needs to be loud and when you see a car approaching in front of you, you have to make sure that you use the horn.

Do not be afraid to use the horn too liberally. Some people only have a bell on their bicycle and if you are only going to have a bell on your bicycle you have to make sure that you are willing to yell when you are faced with a possibly dangerous situation.

Slowing down may also prevent you from getting into an accident. When you are taking the time to slow down you will be able to recognize the drivers around you and also recognize any possible situations.

Try to make eye contact with the drivers that are stopped when you are crossing the road. By making this eye contact you will be able to make sure that the driver recognizes you are crossing and ensure that the driver will not try to pull out into the road.

Driving on the left side of the bike lane is another way that you can make sure you are safe. This may seem counter intuitive for many people because you will be riding closer to the cars rather than farther away from the cars.

When the drivers are driving their concentration is going to be towards the middle of the lane that they are driving in. You want to make sure that you understand where their eyes will be and by moving towards the left in the bike lane you will become more visible to the drivers.

By driving in the left you will also be able to make sure that you are able to swerve and avoid the cars that pull out in front of you. This can be dangerous and should definitely be a last resort when you are riding your bike.

If you would rather not deal with these safety tips you may want to start riding an indoor exercise bike. You will be able to move your body in the same way without all of the outside dangers.

Deciding between an outdoor and an indoor bike can be a hard decision but it is important that you understand which bike is going to be better for you.
