Bicycle riding is one of the best ways to lose weight and become healthier, as far as exercise in concerned. It does not take as much of a toll on your joints because it is low impact, but still offers the opportunity for an individual to drastically increase their heart rate and burn fat.

Because it is so good for the body, it is recommended for children, especially those that are more prone to obesity and being overweight. It is both fun and good for the cardiovascular system.

However, anyone that takes part in this activity must be sure to follow proper safety guidelines. A large number of accidental injuries and deaths each year are caused by negligent drivers or cyclists.

Those that protect themselves and pay close attention to road laws have a higher likelihood of not being involved in accidents. It is especially important for children to understand how to protect their bodies and their lives when using this type of machine.

The Center for Disease Control has estimated that more than five hundred thousand youth have to visit the hospital emergency room each year because of bicycle injuries and deaths. One simple and major way that kids can avoid getting hurt is through the use of a helmet.

A survey by the National SAFE Kids Campaign stated that only forty one percent wore helmets on a regular basis and that thirty five percent of those wore them improperly. Not only should little ones be instructed to wear protective gear, they should know how to wear it properly.

Helmets should sit directly on the head, not tilted to the side. Chin straps should always be fastened and if it does not fit exactly, foam pieces can be used on the inside to create more sturdiness.

The two side straps should meet in a "V" underneath each ear. Check the fit of the helmet often to ensure that the straps are holding firm and not coming loose or undone.

When you are instructing a child to ride a bike, you must make sure that they know how to adequately check for traffic before going across the street. It would also be beneficial for them to know what certain signs and signals mean, like stop, go, and walk.

Another way to have caution when riding is to make sure that the bike is in functioning order. The brakes should be checks often so that you can be sure that your child is protected.

The same measures must be taken to ensure the safeness of an adult. Even experienced riders should always be equipped with a helmet and pads to protect the sensitive areas of the body.

Following the flow of traffic is extremely important. Drivers of vehicles on the road are not always paying attention; if you happen to ride in front of them when they are not, you could be in serious danger.

If you choose to go off road on mountain trails or paths, you should be sure that you know the area well and understand the terrain. Many mountain cyclists have been involved in troubling situations because they did not pay close enough attention to cliffs and designated trails.

Have a way to communicate with the outside world if you get lost or hurt, whether it is a whistle or a cellular telephone. Those that wish to ride at night should wear light or bright colored clothing.

There are also a number of flashing and reflective devices available at biking or sporting goods stores. Attaching them to your bike or body will help to make you more visible to the drivers and pedestrians around you.

Cycling can be a fun way for you and your family to enjoy yourselves, spend time outdoors, and get a lot of exercise. However, those that choose to use them must also follow specific cautionary guidelines if they want to remain unharmed and able to take part in the activity day after day.

Teaching children these rules is especially important so that they can make wise decisions when using a bicycle. Spend time riding along with them and instructing them on the different aspects that they must know; that way, they will be able to follow and understand the safety rules for years to come.
