American society has almost become characterized by unhealthy habits, like overconsumption of fast food and physical inactivity. Much of modern-day entertainment within the country revolves around stagnant play, like video games.
There has been a push, especially within schools and workplaces, to encourage individuals to become more active. In fact, many companies offer special benefits or health programs for employees that make a commitment to stay fit and take care of their body.
However, even with these measures, there is still a great problem with obesity. The Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity (DNPAO), in conjunction with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, has been created to possibly help decrease the prevalence of the issue within the country.
What exactly does it mean when an individual is labeled overweight or obese? These terms refer to an individual's tendency to weigh a greater amount than what is considered healthy for their height.
This term also refers to the ranges of weight that can possibly place a person at more of a risk of having certain diseases and health problems. In reference to adults, obesity is generally measured using height/weight ratio, or body mass index (BMI).
It has been theorized that, for most people, this number coincides with their body fat percentage. Generally, an individual that has a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight, whereas someone with a body mass index of 30 or over is considered obese.
Even though body mass index may correlate with body fat percentage, it does not directly and exactly measure this amount. In fact, the system does not always measure individuals accurately, as many athletes weigh more but are still considered "healthy" and not overweight or obese.
The percentage definitely differs between genders and, often, levels of fitness. Sometimes, the circumference of a person's waist can also be an indicator of their likelihood of developing obesity-related illnesses, like heart disease and diabetes.
Many doctors believe that caloric intake can determine whether or not you will remain or become overweight. In other words, the daily amount of calories that you ingest on a daily basis may possibly have an effect on your health.
A calorie is a unit of energy that is derived from the foods that humans eat. Generally, lower calorie foods are those like fruits, vegetables, and lean meats, whereas foods that have a higher count are usually higher in saturated fats, sugars, and carbohydrates.
There are a specific number of calories that is appropriate and healthy for each individual. Consuming more than this amount on a daily basis has sometimes been linked to gaining weight or becoming obese.
However, this amount can often be counteracted and balanced when physical activity and exercise is performed. It has been hypothesized that, when the intake of calories and the number burned during exercise balance one another, while still allowing the individual the daily portion that they need to survive, the individual can stay at the same weight or even lose pounds.
Many feel that an individual's environment can lead them to making certain decisions when it comes to their health and eating habits. Government agencies trying to reduce obesity have made statements regarding Americans' homes, places of work, schools, and communities can have a great effect for the better on their level of activity and fitness.
However, genes and heredity have also been attributed to the disease. In other words some feel that there are people that are just genetically programmed to weigh more and have a higher likelihood of the diseases that are linked to it.
There are quite a few doctors who feel that these factors can be improved or reduced through behavior; this means that, just because an individual may be more prone to obesity, they do not have to let it take over their life and health. Some government agencies have made a push for a system that will help instill healthy habits in people that may be at risk for this disease.
DNPAO currently funds programs to battle obesity for twenty-five of the United States. The goal is to decrease the prevalence of the issue, increase physical activity, and improve the dietary behaviors that may threaten health and nutrition.
It has been theorized that many health problems would decrease if individuals took the initiative to take better care of their bodies through exercise and nutritious eating. Though these factors may not help everyone that suffers from overweight tendencies, there are probably many that could benefit from them.
Most doctors will advise overweight patients to reduce their sodium, saturated fat, and sugar intake. This can be done by focusing on a diet of fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and low-fat dairy products.
However the issue of obesity must be battled, it is proposed that the reduction of it may also lead to a decrease in the diseases that have been linked to it. It is hoped that the government will keep taking measures to fighting the problem and reducing its prevalence in American society.
