Finding a Method to Motivate Yourself to Exercise

Exercising is something that can improve the overall health and happiness of most people. However, it can be very difficult to stay motivated to exercise sometimes.

Here are a few ideas that may help you stay motivated to exercise even when the weather is bad, you feel tired, or exercising simply seems like too much of a challenge. Some of these ideas will work better for some people than for others.

The best way to find the ones that work for you are to try these tips and ideas until you find the ones that work and the ones that do not. Everyone is different and as a result what works for you may not work for your best friend.

One of the first things that may help you become motivated to exercise is to realize why you want to exercise. You may want to exercise in order to run the upcoming half marathon.

Or perhaps you want to lose some weight. You may also want to sleep better, feel an increase in energy, become stronger, become more toned, become more flexible, or simply feel better overall.

The best reasons to exercise are ones that you come up with for yourself. Ones that are suggested by other people, such as your mother thinks it will be good for you, are not nearly as motivating.

Another thing that may help you stay motivated to exercise is to set goals. When you try this one out, be sure to set both short term and long term goals.

A good time period for a short term goal is about three to six weeks. Meanwhile a long term goal may take an entire year.

These goals should be challenging to reach so that you feel a sense of accomplishment when you reach them. However, they should not be so challenging that you feel like you will never reach them.

If you set goals that are too high it is likely that the goals will actually discourage you from exercising instead of encouraging you to exercise. Your goals will tend to be more motivating if they are connected to your reason for exercising as well.

It may also help you feel more motivated to go and exercise if you set a reward for yourself for when you accomplish the goal. Set a smaller reward for the short term goals and a larger reward for the long term goals.

A third thing that you can do that may help you become more motivated to exercise is to keep a journal entry of every time that you exercise. In this journal entry you should write down how exercising makes you feel, what your mood was like before and after the workout routine, what your energy levels were like before and after the workout, any improvements in losing weight that you have achieved, what kind of quality of sleep you received and so forth.

Over time you will be able to track what combinations of activities were the most beneficial to you and what kind of impact that exercising has had on your life. It may also help you to take a picture of yourself at the beginning of each month to put in your journal.

The visual image of the improvement you are making may have a larger impact on your motivation than anything else. However, you must be consistent in your journal keeping if this method is to have a chance of succeeding in helping you become motivated.

A fourth thing that you will want to try to make sure you do is work out hard enough that your body releases endorphins. This is going to take some mental toughness to do.

However, the endorphins are the part of the body that can make you feel good after you exercise. It can be much harder to stay motivated to exercise if you do not feel good when you have completed your workout.

A fifth thing that you may want to try is creating a collage of inspiring quotes and images and placing it in a location where it will remind and motivate you to exercise every day. There are many inspiring quotes and images in fitness magazines and in other locations.

Choose the things that when you see them you feel inspired to include in your collage. You may want to keep your goals with this collage.

Nothing will hinder your motivation to exercise more than an injury. It is important to avoid injury which can result through using the improper technique in whatever form of exercise you choose.

If you feel pain of any kind after exercising you will want to talk to a doctor or physical trainer about whether or not you are performing the exercise correctly or what you can do to relieve the pain. It is a good idea to check to make sure you are performing the exercise correctly before you feel any real pain as well.
