Exercise has always been something that has been praised as something good for you and something that everyone should do. However, there have been a few cases where exercising has not been good for some people.
This is mostly known as exercise addiction. Exercise is generally a very good thing that is accompanied by hundreds of benefits that can improve your overall healthy.
However, when exercise is taken too far, it can seriously damage the well being of a person. When used correctly, it can have a major impact for good physically and mentally.
Unfortunately when it is taken too far, it will have an impact for the negative both physically and mentally. In an addict's life, exercise becomes the number one priority.
As a result, everything else is pushed aside. The things that are pushed aside include families, careers, and other social interactions.
You can see why exercise would then have a negative impact. The condition of being addicted to exercise is referred to as many different names.
For example, it is called exercise dependence, exercise addiction, obligatory exercise, compulsive athleticism, compulsive exercising, and exercise abuse. There are many symptoms of this condition.
You may have noticed that your best friend is constantly on her exercise bike and as one her closest confident, you know that she is insecure about her body weight even though she is currently in the normal range of body weight. Or perhaps she is simply try to obtain the perfect, computerized shape of a model that she sees on the television or on billboards.
People with an addition will feel a horrible dread if they do not exercise. Sometimes they feel this dread when they have not achieved the exercise "high" resulting from the endorphins that are released.
These people will also have a very rigid fitness schedule that they will not alter under any circumstances. If your friend begins to say I cannot meet at this time, this time, or this time on a particular day because she has to exercise, even though she is not meeting with a team and that is always the case, you may start to get worried.
Even worse, addicts are sometimes aware of their condition and do not want others to know about their problem. As a result, they will exercise in secret.
They will even go to extremes to avoid trainers and gym staff. The point at which you should really get concerned is if they stick to their exercise routine even when they are injured or sick.
By continuing to exercise, they will cause more damage to themselves. You need to take action to help your friend if she also begins skipping school, work, or other obligations in order to exercise.
At this point, exercise addiction is considered a mental disorder and it may help your friend to get involved with support groups for conditions such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or other Mental Health Support groups.
There are many free support groups online where sufferers can get the support and help they need through talking to others who are having the same problems and understand what they are going through. Despite the negative consequences of exercise addiction, the American Psychiatric Association does not recognize it as a primary disorder.
However, this condition has been filed as a primary symptom of bulimia nervosa, which is an eating disorder. A person with bulimia will combine intense exercise as a way of making up for binge eating despite purging or in order to lose weight.
The other primary eating disorder is known as anorexia nervosa. Excessive exercising has also been connected with this disorder.
It has also been connected with obsessive compulsive disorder. With this disorder, exercise is used to relieve anxiety about a consequence other than weight gain.
This person may be on the stationary bike 24/7 so that he will be strong or so that he will be able to obtain and maintain a chiseled shape. A girl may be on the stationary bike all of the time so that she will continue to be the fastest and most in-shape in comparison to her peers.
Exercise can be a very good thing when it is used properly. It can boost your mood if you are struggling with depression.
It can help you maintain a healthy weight and feel more energized as perform activities throughout the day. However, addiction to it will wear your body out and take away from everything else that is important in that person's life.
