There are many different ways in which pressure is applied to young athletes. Unfortunately, this removes all of the fun from the experience.
The pressure found within sports is tremendous. This condition is not limited to professional sports either.
There is too much pressure put on teenagers and children that has resulted in many negative consequences. All too often this pressure comes from parents themselves.
There is enough stress related to the schedule of a sport without the added pressure from parents. Parents need to be careful to help their children keep the stress and fun aspects of the sport in perspective.
In addition, parents need to realize that most children will not become professional athletes no matter how much pressure is put on them. Most children will not even earn a college scholarship for their athletic abilities.
If you are concerned that your child will not be able to pay for and attend college without an athletic scholarship, you may want to consider the surer path of them going to college. Instead of spending tons of money on their training, you may encourage them to play sports with their friends for fun and saving the money that you would have otherwise spent so they can attend college.
In addition, your child will be able to choose a college in which he or she wants to study. If a sports scholarship dictates where your child goes for college, he or she may not enjoy attending college because it will not be where he or she really wants to go.
Most parents do not realize that an athletic scholarship will not pay most of the college expenses anyway. The best option for money if you want your child to attend college is to save the money yourself or to encourage your child to earn scholarships with their brains instead of their muscles.
The children who are the most successful in sports love doing it. They are not pressured into participating it.
If the child feels like they have to be good at something for a reason other than they love it and they push themselves too hard, they will burn out. As a parent, you need to make sure that your child loves the sport and is not going to burn out.
Some parents get frustrated with children who try one sport and want to switch to a new one every semester. They think that their child is wasting their time and money through not developing any one thing.
In addition, they believe their child is uncommitted and unsettled. However, these kinds of children will discover what they really love to do sooner or later and he or she will become much better at it than many children who have done the same thing for a long time because he or she loves it.
You should make sure that your child knows that when he or she signs up for a sport, he or she is signing up for a whole season. However, after the season is over, you should allow him or her to move on to something else if he or she wants to.
In order to avoid regret on your part and on that of your child's, you will want to make sure your child knows what he or she is signing up for when they want to participate in a sport. Let your child know about practices, the length of the season, weekend games, practices, and so forth.
In addition, it is bad practice as a parent to take away practices and games as a form of punishment to your child when they have behaved poorly unless the team is facilitating that behavior. In that case, your child probably needs to quit.
However, as a basic rule, removal of team sports for a day or two is not a good form of punishment. It is not fair to the team who depends on your child.
In addition, you will want to make sure that you are fully supporting the child instead of reliving your own life through your child. Many parents also struggle with this because they enjoyed a particular sport too much.
When children are too pressured, they will quit sports as soon as possible. When they move out, they may not exercise at all ever again.
Others may only exercise in private and individually. For example, he or she will invest in a stationary bike and exercise on it when no one is around to tell them they are being lazy and not working as hard as he or she should.
They will tremendously enjoy the freedom that their stationary bike gives. Unfortunately, they will not look back on their high school career with fondness.
