A quick trip to the local Walgreens pointed out a distinct difference in the types of over the counter head lice treatments available. While the traditional and familiar brands were the first to catch the eye, they contained a rather startling list of chemicals, neurotoxins and potentially dangerous ingredients. Fortunately, there were also some natural and non-toxic alternatives to consider.
Take look at the most popular brands, and decide for yourself which is best for your family.
RID Lice Killing Shampoo
Probably one of the first names that come to mind regarding lice treatment, RID is an industry staple. The product instructions call for two treatments, one immediately upon discovering the infestation and a second treatment 7 - 10 days after the first.
The active ingredients in RID are piperonyl butoxide and pyrethrum extract. Be cautious before using this product; a phone call to your doctor is advisable, especially if anyone in your household suffers from asthma, allergies or other respiratory problems. The toxins in this product have been known to cause severe problems in humans, so caution is definitely advised.
Jolis Cheveux Lice Treatment Products
If you tend to gravitate toward natural products for your family, you'll want to consider this line of non-toxic head lice treatment products. It comes in a shampoo, conditioner, scalp conditioner and even a fabric spray for linens, pillows, hats, etc.
The list of ingredients includes no harsh chemicals or toxins. In fact, the active ingredients are essential oils, completely natural and non-toxic. With the increase in chemical sensitivities and asthma in so many households, this might be a good choice for your family.
Do contact your pediatrician before using this on very young children; the product is recommended for children over the age of five.
Nix (Permethrin) Lice Treatment
The third product we looked at is also a well-known name in the industry. The active ingredient in Nix is Permethrin, which, according to the National Institutes of Health's website, may cause skin irritation, rash, redness and swelling.
It claims to kill lice and their eggs (nits) in one application, so any potential exposure is short-term in theory. Still, the list of chemical components is enough to raise concerns, especially if you or your child are chemically sensitive. Be especially careful of getting this in the eyes, nose or mouth.
