Iodine is a mineral that is present in every cell of our bodies and is essential to our very existence. It is particularly needed for a well functioning thyroid gland. When the thyroid ceases to function at its optimum - something that begins to happen naturally as we age - the result is fatigue, hair loss, weight gain, dry skin, brain fog, elevated cholesterol, and much more. Often people who have such symptoms are tested for thyroid function to have the test returned showing normal function even though it may be only working at as little as 30 percent of its capacity. This is due to the wide range of what is considered normal.

The symptoms of underactive thyroid appear very slowly and progressively. You feel tired and less able to concentrate. Weight gain seems to come from nowhere, even when you consistently watch what you eat, and weight loss is more difficult. Depression is a common symptom though anti-depressants will do nothing to address the root cause. According to a study of 4000 patients tested by the Center of Holistic Medicine, 96 percent were iodine deficient. The World Health Organization has estimated that 72 percent of the world's population is iodine deficient.

Iodine is not abundant in most of the foods we eat, primarily found in seafood, seaweed, and raw sunflower seeds. It is interesting to note that the only population who generally meet the recommended amount of daily iodine consumption are the Japanese because of their higher seaweed and seafood diets. For the rest of the world, adequate amounts of iodine are only available with dietary supplementation.

Another cause of iodine deficiency comes from exposure to toxins such as fluoride, chloride, and bromine that are abundant in our environment. These toxins that come from chemical residues, the water we drink and products we use every day displace iodine and make it unavailable for use by our bodies. Without adequate availability of the mineral one cannot have a functioning thyroid resulting in hypothyroidism.

The Women's Health Institute of Texas recommends iodine supplements not only for a healthy thyroid but for a strengthened immune system and overall improved health. The iodine found in nature is in compounded salt forms rather than its atomic level form that is more readily available to the body. Atomic iodine supplements provide iodine in way that has increased activity, while being less toxic and irritating. Taken in small quantities each day, users often report dramatic results in benefits to their health and vitality.
