For thousands of years, armor has safeguarded soldiers and police against combat and attacks. It has changed in materials and appearance, but is still widely used today.
Armor has been used as reportedly used as protection in battle since at least 1500 BC. It is still utilized in some sense today by soldiers and police officers.
Protecting oneself while in battle or in the likelihood of exposure to bullets and other combat weapons is a necessity. This method of protection has been used throughout history during many battles, but is especially notable during the Roman wars and during Medieval Times.
These suits of armor were usually designed from plates of metal that were heated and hand molded. Some of them are very intricate, and most were extremely heavy.
Many of the suits that are used in films and re-enactments today have been fashioned from sheets of metal that are usually pressed using some kind of heavy duty machinery, like a plate roll or press. These are made to imitate those from the past, and are not as protective.
However, there are also more modern examples of armor; during the Civil War and World War I, soldiers would pay individuals to craft metal suits, usually made of steel or aluminum, to wear underneath their uniforms to protect them from bullet wounds. Breastplates and side plates were also often created to place on horses to keep them from being harmed from bullets and arrows.
Metal or ceramic vests whose purpose is to divert ammunition can also be covered in cloth to make them more comfortable. Modern day protection for soldiers and police officers is most often made out of interwoven fibers and some metallic components.
One of the products most often used in bullet-proof vests is Kevlar; this is a fabric that is made out of synthetic fibers and is also semi heat resistant. It was mostly used on tanks, helmets, and face guards during the conflict of the 1980's.
There are other methods of personal safety equipment that have been designed and created based off of the armor that was used in ancient times. This includes shields; many police professionals, like those that are members of SWAT, make use of them during riots and attacks.
They can stop projectiles and divert blows while also being able to push dangerous individuals back and prevent them from advancing. Shields vary in size, and each is used for a specific purpose.
In ancient times, they were mostly made out of wood, animal hide, wicker, and metal. However, today they are mostly created through the use of synthetic materials.
The majority of police and soldiers that have to utilize them are those that are assigned to defend against terrorists, sieges, and hostage attempts. Ballistic vests are another clothing item that has been created to help guard the torso against blows and ammo.
Soft vests are used to deflect grenade fragments and handgun or shotgun projectiles. More heavy duty types are usually fabricated with a metal plate and a fabric covering, and are better at handling shotgun shells and knife attacks.
Modern armor is a combination of many different protective vests and clothing items. There is a constant push by the military and those that design safety wear to manufacture items that are even more safe and strong than ones that have already been produced.
Helmets are another vital piece to the security puzzle; they are an essential part to the survival of anyone who is going to be involved in combat or dangerous situations. Even soldiers in the ancient past knew the importance of them; their suits of armor were not complete without some method of keeping the head and brain safe.
The majority of helmets used in the military are made of Kevlar and meant to guard against ammunition wounds; however, there are also those that have been designed to withstand trauma from shockwaves, explosions, motor vehicle accidents, and physical attacks. They are usually utilized in cooperation with gas or ballistic masks, which guard against explosions, shrapnel, bullets, and other dangerous projectiles.
As long as humans are involved in wars, combat, and disputes, there will always be a need for bodily arming and defense. It is safe to say that armor will only become more advanced, powerful, and possibly comfortable as time progresses and as new technologies are developed.
