While people are starting to realize the importance of collecting food storage, they unfortunately do not always know how to properly store their food storage. However, food storage will do no good if it is not stored properly as the food will rot and you will not know it until you go to use it.

By that point, it will be devastating to discover. There are many things you need to keep in mind if you are going to store your food properly.

One of the most important elements of your food storage is water. A person can survive three weeks without food, but only about three days without water.

Most of the body is made out of water. In addition, water is useful for cooking and hygiene needs.

It will be important to still take care of your hygiene needs during tight times. It may be even more important to take care of your hygiene needs when things are tight because you will not be able to afford the doctor's bills.

For your food storage, you should store at least 14 gallons per adult. This amount of water will last about two weeks in covering cooking, hygiene and drinking needs.

Every adult will use about one gallon of water per day. It will be important to rotate this water out as it only has a shelf life of six to twelve months.

Water storage is critical for those who depend on a town water system. However, someone with a well and a hand pump will not have to worry about storing water as much.

They may want to store water anyway in case of a drought or if their well dries up. In addition to storing actual water, you will want to store a heavy duty water filter or treatment system and spare filters.

Other water purifiers may also be a good idea. In rough times, you may have access to dirty water and you will want to clean it.

Another thing you will want to keep in mind is what is going to make up the bulk of your food storage. Most experts recommend grains, flour, and beans as main staples for food storage.

When these things are stored in the right kind of containers, they will last for a very long time. The best kinds of containers to keep these kinds of food in are large five or six gallon buckets.

These buckets should be airtight and sealed. They should not be see through containers either as the light can penetrate clear containers easier.

The light will make the food decompose faster. You can get these kinds of containers from many different bulk food suppliers.

For one adult for a year, you should have 350 pounds of whole grain wheat berries, 100 pounds of other whole grains, 45 pounds of rice, 35 pounds of pasta, and 75 pounds of cereals. These cereals may include granola, oatmeal, grits, Quinoa, and processed ready to eat cereals.

This may sound like a lot of food, but you really do need that much. You will want to store a variety of foods including spices, dried fruits and vegetables, and so forth.

You are not used to eating wheat and it will be very difficult to start doing so when you need to if that is all you have. Remember to store the items that you will need to prepare the food if you need to use it.

For the wheat berries, you will need a wheat grinder. Another mistake that many people make is purchasing an electric grinder.

However, when you have to use your food storage you may not have electricity. It is best to store a hand wheat grinder.

You will also want to store other items like a fire starter, medical kit, lanterns, and warm blankets. These things will help you prepare your food and meet other necessary bodily needs.

It is also a good idea to store about 75 pounds of legumes and beans per adult. This should include a variety such as kidney beans, lentils, pinto beans, navy beans, split peas, and so forth.

In addition, you should store about 75 pounds of frozen beef, chicken, and fish per adult. If possible, these things should be put in a deep freeze so that they will last longer.

These 75 pounds can also include beef jerky, dehydrated meats, and canned meats. You will desperately want meat when times are rough for the nutrients and calories that it provides.
