Erectile dysfunction or male impotency is the inability to have an adequate erection for satisfactory sexual activities. Although this syndrome is more common in older men, more and more young men are being afflicted by it.

Male sexual arousal is a complicated process that involves your brain, hormonal production, emotions, nerves, muscles and blood circulation and thus erectile dysfunction can result from problems associated to these areas. Sometimes it is a combination of physical and psychological issues that causes erectile dysfunction.

So what can you do if you are a victim of erectile dysfunction? First thing you should do is to see your doctor to see if you have serious medical conditions that could be the basis of your problem. For heavy smokers and drinkers, you may be surprised that by just cutting down or quit the consumption of tobacco or alcohol, you may already be able to see immediate benefits.

Many studies have linked erectile dysfunction with alcohol consumption. Alcohol abuse can impair testosterone production and shrink your testicles. Lower levels of testosterone suppress sex drive in men and are also known to cause impotency. Alcohol may also interfere with normal sperm structure and production and thus may also cause male fertility problems.

Smoking can cause plaque buildup in the arteries which is known as atherosclerosis. The plaque obstructs blood flow causing several of blood circulatory problems throughout the body and erectile dysfunction is one of them.

Next, start a regular exercise program. Regular exercise can have many wonderful effects on your erectile dysfunction condition. By exercising regularly, you improve your blood circulation, reduce weight, increase your testosterone and growth hormones, reduce your stress, anxieties and depression with the production of more "happy hormones" such as dopamine, serotonin, melatonin and endorphin.

In other words, exercise can treat many of the physical and psychological issues that cause erectile dysfunction. As such, for most men who are plagued with limp erections, a simple lifestyle change can have a great significance to your sex life and all these happening without any prescription drugs which are known to have side effects and can be rather expensive if taken regularly.

So if you want to have those hard erections that you used to have when you were in your teens, then take up a healthy lifestyle by quitting smoking and alcohol consumption coupled with a dose of regular exercise and start making your partner wonderfully satisfied in bed.
