Many people choose to physically exert themselves through sports. Pursuing these activities, whether in a group or solo, allows for individuals to get a rigorous workout while having an enjoyable time, which brings the thrill and determination of competition to the physical benefits of exercise.

This makes for an interesting situation, as some people that actively pursue sport don't mean to give themselves workouts of this caliber, but end up inadvertently receiving the physical benefits while focusing on having fun. Selecting the right sport for the right individual therefore becomes an important choice for those investigating pursuing sports further.

Tennis an excellent option for anyone interested in selecting a sport, because it provides an intensive exercise experience while simultaneously being fun and accessible for nearly everyone. All that is required to play is friends and the right equipment, which is easily obtainable and is not prohibitively expensive.

Tennis is played by having either two individuals or two teams composed of two people face each other and attempt to score points. Points are awarded by striking a small ball over a net in the middle of the court with a racquet, in the effort to have the ball bounce twice on the opponent's side of the court.

While the premise of the game is a simple one, there a certain intricacies and strategies that players learn as they progress, which will be beneficial in order to defeat skilled opponents. Learning basic maneuvering and strategy will prove to be a wise investment for any player.

However, new players should prioritize the effort to master racquet control and power, as well as learning the pacing of the game, which requires short explosive bursts of power instead of a slow marathon of movement. Honing reflexes and familiarizing one's self with the speed and power that opponents will send the ball is of utmost importance for newer athletes.

There are varying competition levels for players of any skill set. These range from simple pickup games using designated courts in the park, to highly formalized games that have teams or clubs square off against each other in a match making situation.

For newer users, finding a park to play in, along with friends to play with, is all that is required to have an enjoyable time. Most users will select this option, as the majority of tennis athletes play for light competition and fun, instead of belonging to official clubs or teams.

Tennis offers many workout benefits to the people who play it. These benefits often happen inadvertently, as fun is the primary focus, but still serve to make athletes more fit and conditioned for future exercise pursuits.

One of the most obvious areas of focus in the game is the large amount of running that is required. Because matches must be won by a certain point margin, there are no time limits in the game, so people must be ready for whatever comes their way.

This running exercises the legs and strengthens them, because of the sometimes brutal toll that is taken on them during sprinting periods. The body is then forces to improve the function of these muscles to deal with future stresses in a more efficient way.

Additionally, the arms are strengthened due to the swinging motion involved with running, as well as the physical force required to keep a ball in play. While the muscle groups in the arms will not expand to become huge, they will become more limber and toned as a result of the activity.

One of the big draws of tennis is the social aspect provided during matches. People are pitted against other people in friendly competition, which builds common ground and interest. For this reason people often play tennis with their friends and family to improve relationships with them.

Tennis is an enjoyable experience that also provides a rigorous workout. Additionally, the game teaches social skills, teamwork, and good sportsmanship that are built through the strain and effort of competitiveness.
