When using exercise equipment of any kind, one of the most important factors in deciding whether an exercise regimen will be a success or a failure is whether the individual has set a series of goals that focus on improving self expectations and physical capability. Doing so leads to better health levels overall.

This is especially true for treadmill users, because of the commitment and effort that using one entails. There are pros and cons to every piece of home gym equipment, but the treadmill is always a challenge because of the physical range of motion required for it- because individuals cannot simply coast by like they theoretically could with an exercise bike or elliptical machine.

Therefore, understanding what treadmill use will entail and the user's own physical capabilities is an important thing to consider before use. For example, not everyone will be immediately comfortable with the equipment, because they are used to another range of motion, or are perhaps unfamiliar with the equipment to begin with.

Starting slow is recommended. It is not necessary for the individual using the machine to start on the easiest setting, but they should ideally begin with a mildly taxing workout that can be built upon and continually improved in the future.

Now, it is time to consider goals. Many people choose goals related either to speed related difficulty within a time limit, or they want to improve their overall time on the machine so that their session at the end of their milestone is much lengthier.

In either case, the concept of incremental increase should be of paramount importance. Incremental increase is simply the process of adding slightly more difficulty to every session that is undertaken on the machinery.

Therefore, those who want to increase their difficulty should start by walking or jogging on a slow speed for the first few sessions. Once they reach the point where they no longer feel taxed by the workout, it is time to escalate the difficulty by a small margin.

Upping the difficulty slowly allows for the body to adapt each time to a relatively small increase of speed, because the body will adapt in real time to the progress made in previous session. Therefore, maintaining the ratio of difficulty to previous efforts is what makes this increase both an easy one to accept while being beneficial to the user.

Likewise, those that wish to improve their overall time spent on session should pick a speed that they are comfortable with, and then exercise until they start to feel fatigued. Then, it is simply a matter of extending the time of the sessions in manageable increments until greater progress is seen.

For those improving their times, it is not necessary to adjust the time upwards after every session, nor is there a need for dramatic increase. For example, adding a minute to every session does not seem like much of an addition, but over a month the tiny initial number becomes a much more impressive one.

Likewise, increasing the time limit by five minutes a week offers a moderate increase rate that will be impressive over time, while allowing the individual and their body to adjust accordingly. In either case, keeping the amplification rate steady from session to session is important, as it will establish a body rhythm that will make the workouts much less intimidating for the use of the equipment.

When deciding upon longer term goals, it is wise for people to have immediately achievable option; options that will result after work and effort have been made for a while, and an end goal that can be strived toward. This end goal is something to keep in mind during workout sessions, and can range from anything from target clothing size to ideal weight, or even a set time and difficulty on the treadmill.

Achieving these objectives leads to a great sense of personal satisfaction and self worth, and can be the impetus for habit building. These positive feelings can be redirected right back into exercise for further development.

Striving for and achieving objectives and goals is one of the most important aspects of treadmill use. By reaching these milestones, individuals feel a tangible sense of progress and reward that comes with successfully reaching ideals that they didn't initially feel was possible.
