The purpose of the thyroid shield is to provide radiation protection to doctors, nurses and technologists working with X-rays. Overexposure to radiation can have serious consequences for the thyroid gland, such as cancer. There are some types of medical equipment that produce radiation, such as fluoroscopy machines. It is necessary to avoid the effects of radiation.

Typically, a thyroid shield is used in conjunction with an x-ray apron. Some things to consider in the choice of a thyroid shield would be protective coverage, comfort and weight. Lead is only one of multiple materials which can protect against radiation. Since lead shields can be heavy, many healthcare workers choose to consider a lead-free shield.

Thyroid shields made from lead-free materials generally provide radiation protection that is equal to lead while being non-toxic and lighter in weight, resulting in greater comfort. Due to the more advanced materials and manufacturing process, lead-free shields generally cost more than lead shields. One type for consideration are Envirolite. This shield offers a 40% reduction in weight over lead and is therefore the lightest protection available. In addition to being lightweight, since it is lead-free, it is environmentally-friendly. There are no heavy-metal disposal costs that are associated with these. The downside is the material is more fragile than lead and will wear out sooner. Replacement costs will need to be considered. One made of Burlite can also be considered, as it offers a 35% reduction in weight. It is made from both lead and lead-free materials combined. Burlite is less expensive than Envirolite and will last longer than Envirolite as well, since the portion of lead in the formula gives more structural integrity to the material. Shield covers come in a wide range of standard colors, as well as designer prints. Special rip-stop material is also available for superior durability. Protective clothing can be purchased from the same online company and coordinated with the same type and style of material for a more stylish look.

Thyroid shields will come in various levels for the user's needs. Consider discussing any concerns about the protection level with the radiation safety officer before making a purchase.
