Flexibility may seem like something trivial that only some individuals are gifted with. However, it is actually essential to the performance and fitness of every athlete.

Not only does the elasticity of muscles help you to avoid injury by pulling or hyper-extending limbs, it also helps you to tackle challenging athletic situations better. Many athletes completely forget about how to perform a proper warm up.

Even athletes like football and baseball players to remain flexible and able to have a wide range of motion. One of the most important things to remember is to warm up your body and make it easier to move before you decide to start stretching.

Though most athletes should try to work each part of their bodies, you may wish to focus on the area that you use the most. If you are a runner or cyclist, it is probably best that you spend a great deal of your stretching time on your legs.

However, it is best to remain breathing comfortably and regularly so that you can get the correct amount of oxygen that you need. There are so many different benefits to being able to increase the range of motion in your limbs and back.

You are less likely to experience injuries, especially in contact sports, because there is not as big of a shock to these areas when you are tackled or have to change direction very quickly. It helps runners to keep getting their workout and makes them less likely to have problems with the IT band.

Doing proper stretches of the feet and bottom part of the legs can also help ease the pain of shin splints. For some athletes, flexibility is a necessity.

This includes gymnasts and dancers; with properly creating elasticity in their bodies, they would be unable to have the extension that one must have when performing in this sport. There are many areas that should not be neglected when you are stretching, including the neck and shoulders.

Muscles in these areas are very likely to strain if they are not warmed up properly. Increasing flexibility is a great way for any athlete to increase their skill and performance.
