Most men just think of erectile dysfunction as a natural condition associated with age and poping a blue pill is all there is to it to get a hard erection again. Unknown to them, their impotency could be a prelude to more dangerous medical conditions or they are already having those conditions which may need urgent medical attention.
You see, the process of achieving a hard erection is rather complicated and erection problems may occur for many reasons. The failure of getting good erections can be caused psychological or physical issues or a combination of the two issues.
For the purpose of this article, we will look at the physical issues of erectile dysfunction patients. Physical causes of this condition is related to a malfunction or damage to the sequence of events that lead to a hard erection which involves the nerve impulses in the nervous system and the responses to these impulses in the muscles, cellular tissues, blood vessels in and near the penis.
Herein lies the problem as usually, the malfunction or damage in the sequence has to do with the arteries, muscles, and surrounding tissues of the penis, and this is commonly the result of other diseases.
Diseases that are commonly associated to erectile dysfunction include:-
Neurological diseases - The nervous system plays a very important role in getting and maintaining an erection and it is very common for men suffering from multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, stroke, Parkinson's disease and spinal cord damages to also suffer from erectile dysfunction. Doctors say that this is due to the interruption of the transmission of nerve impulses between the brain and the penis.
Prostate cancer - Although prostate cancer does not cause erectile dysfunction per se, it is the treatment of the cancer such as radiation, hormonal therapies or surgery that can lead to erectile dysfunction problems.
Diabetes - We all know that this disease can cause nerve and arterial damage which in turn causes impotency. Research has shown that diabetic patients doubles the risk of having erectile dysfunction problems.
Vascular diseases - Vascular diseases are diseases that affect the blood vessels. These diseases include atherosclerosis, heart diseases, low or high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. As a matter of fact, vascular diseases are thought to account for about 70% of erectile dysfunction patients as the diseases restrict blood flow to the heart, the brain and of course, the penis.
Kidney diseases - Kidney diseases may cause chemical changes to occur in the body that affect the hormones, blood circulation and nerve functions. These changes do often cause patients to lose interest in sex or affecting their sexual abilities. Medicines used to treat kidney diseases may also be a culprit.
Hormonal imbalances - The hormones prolactin and testosterone, can affect responses to sexual stimulation. These hormonal imbalances can be caused by tumors in the pituitary gland, kidney diseases, liver diseases, or hormonal treatment for prostate cancer.
The above are just some of the medical conditions that can cause impotency in men. This is why if you are suffering from erectile dysfunction problems, you are better off seeing your doctor to check for other serious medical conditions which you may not be aware of.
