One of the most common ailments of pregnancy is experiencing food cravings. The most common food cravings among pregnant women are chocolate, ice cream, meat, cheese, and salty snack foods.

In general, it is believed that these cravings are an indicator of what your body is lacking nutritionally as it changes for the growing baby. For example, if you want salty foods, you may need more sodium as your increase the amount of blood your body uses to feed the baby.

If you find you want fruit all of the time, you may need more vitamin C or folic acid. Even though this is the base of the cravings in general, we sometimes misinterpret the craving or eat too much of it.

For example, you crave something sweet, so you eat ice cream instead of the nutritional fruit that your body was hoping for. As your body is not satisfied with ice cream, you will continue to eat more and more of it.

This is a very unhealthy trend which could lead to excessive weight gain. While some weight gain is good during pregnancy, excessive weight gain can be harmful to the mother and the baby.

During certain times of your pregnancy you may find yourself craving things that are unhealthy more than other times. There are many ways in which you can curb your craving if you are careful.

The cravings occur because of hormonal shifts during pregnancy. These hormonal shifts cause the sense of smell to become much more acute.

As you can smell much better, some things will taste wonderful while others will taste awful. The cravings are related to this improved sense of smell to some extent.

When you are craving something, it is okay to have some, but you need to clearly set what your limits are in how much you should eat. The first thing you can do to curve your cravings is to start by eating a healthy and fairly large breakfast in the morning.

By starting out with the right nutrients, you will be full and you may not develop cravings as bad throughout the day. In addition, you can find other and healthier substitutes for your cravings.

For example, try eating some wheat thins instead of French fries, try eating frozen yogurt instead of ice cream, or try eating frozen grapes instead of candy. If you need salty, try pretzels.

Chocolate may be one of the hardest cravings to let go of because chocolate is seen as something that can help the baby and the mother. With chocolate, it is okay to have a little chocolate, but it is not okay to gorge yourself on it.

While it may be tempting to grab the ultra large king size chocolate bar, the truth is that the smallest sample may curbed your craving too. Go for the normal size candy bar instead.

In order to avoid gorging, it is a good idea to eat several smaller meals instead of large ones. Even though you eat a lot at meal time, your blood sugar will drop and you will become very hungry.

When this happens your cravings will kick in full force and you will want to eat the whole pizza. By constantly snacking on healthy foods, you will not allow your blood sugar to drop and then you will be able to say no to the unhealthy cravings.

Many women crave the calcium found in dairy products during pregnancy. Try to eat these when you feel the need to, but do not overindulge yourself.

As you pick what you snack on, choose foods that are low calorie. There are many alternatives to real, high fat product you are craving.

Another thing that can help you eat the right foods is exercise. When you exercise, your body realizes that it needs certain nutrients to run efficiently.

It will begin to crave healthier foods and shun the foods that are unhealthy. Of course, this may take a couple of weeks of exercising and you should follow your doctor's instructions in regards to exercising.

While it is generally advised against to go running unless you ran before pregnancy quite often, you can still make use of the treadmill in your family room. In fact, it is a very good idea that you do.

Instead of running, try walk on it to avoid the up and down bouncing motion. However, even walking on your treadmill can provide you with many benefits than can be listed here.
