Choosing the right foods in your diet is an important aspect in having healthy teeth and good oral hygiene. Food can cause unnecessary plaque build-up, stains, and cavities.
Establishing good nutritional habits in kids and teenagers can be especially beneficial for good eating patterns and meal choices throughout their lives. Make sure you set a good example to the little ones and fill your diet with healthy snacks and meals.
The foods that you eat come in contact with the germs and bacteria that live in the mouth. If you do not brush, plaque will accumulate on the dentils.
Plague thrives on the starches and sugars that are found in a great deal of foods. When plaque combines with the sugars and starches, an acid is produced that attacks enamel on the teeth, and eventually causes decay.
This means that when you brush your dentils you need to do it thoroughly. Be sure to not only brush the fronts, but the back and inside as well.
You back molars are most susceptible to cavities and plaque build-up. This is because we chew with our molars so they have to endure the most amount of exposure to sugars and starches.
Choosing a healthy diet may sound easy; however, fruits, milk, cereals, bread and some vegetables contain sugars and / or starches. Carbonated sodas, sweet fruit drinks and sugary snack foods should be limited.
You don't have to avoid these foods, just keep in mind that you should eat a balanced diet, brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily. Too much sugar will only eat away at your teeth, causing cavities.
Little kids are most susceptible to this because most do not get an adequate amount of calcium in their diet. Make sure you give your kids milk or other forms of calcium to make sure their dentils are strong and able to fight against plaque.
Make sure you and your kids drink plenty of water. Water keeps bacteria from festering in your mouth for long periods of time.
Bacteria on the tongue causes bad breathe. Water can also help catch and remove food and sugars that get stuck on your teeth after eating.
Make sure you eat a variety of healthy meals from the five major food groups. Eating well balanced meals helps keep both your oral and physical health in top condition.
Cut down on snacking in between meals. Eating constantly all day only gives your teeth a bath in sugars and starches that weaken enamel and cause cavities.
Be careful what you eat and what you put around you. To help with this, try to pack your own lunches for work and only eat that.
Stock your house with healthy food and snacks that encourage a healthy lifestyle for you and your family. By surrounding yourself with good food, you will be forced to eat better.
Limit snacks and drinks that are high in sugar. This is especially hard with drinks like coffee and soda that fill our day.
Coffee may help keep you awake, but it leaves unattractive stains on your dentils that sometimes can only be removed by a professional. Soda is one of the worst things for your teeth because it is so harsh on enamel.
Try not to have these drinks every day, but rather only have them occasionally. You should, of course, brush twice a day and floss daily.
Even when you eat a well balanced diet, your dentils still need to be cleaned frequently and regularly. Get in the habit of brushing before you go to bed and before you leave for work.
This will not only keep your mouth clean, but give you better breath. Visit your dentist for regular check-ups.
Your dentist can clean your mouth more thoroughly, and he can catch problems before they become problems. He will help you take the steps necessary to ensure that your teeth, gums, and entire mouth are as healthy as they can be.
