Nutrition is always vital for every person regardless of the stage she is in her life. Health could greatly affect menopause. A woman going under menopause is more at risk for heart ailments and osteoporosis, she should be careful with her food choices. Calcium is vital in her diet. For a woman before menopausal, the recommended intake of calcium per day is 1,000mgs while for those after menopause, 1,500 is the recommended intake. This is not enough; they should also eat food rich in calcium such as milk, cheese and green leafy vegetables. Vitamin D should also be given importance for it aids in the absorption of calcium in the body. However, one should also consider that high amounts of calcium can cause constipation so drinking of enough fluids is also needed.

The new diet should contain a decrease in fats. Fats contain more calories than carbohydrates and proteins. It should only be allotted with 30% of the daily calories limit. Eating fruits and vegetables is a no-fail formula for gaining a healthy body. It is preferred to eat foods high in vitamin C and carotene. Examples of these are orange, carrots and tomatoes. These also contain fiber that help mobilize bowel activity. This decreases the risk for colon cancer. 20 to 30 mg of fiber a day is the recommended amount to be consumed by both adults and children.

Foods high in salt may be delicious but it should be avoided. With age, the menopausal woman is at risk for high blood pressure. Foods like dried fish, sausages and bacon should be taken out from her regular menu. Processed sugar found in most drinks and foods should also be avoided. They contain empty calories that do not contribute anything well to the body expect weight. Dietary supplements could also be taken as advised by the dietician. Remember not to take supplements by yourself for they may have repercussions. It may cause toxicity that could lead to illness rather than wellness.

Exercise is also advised for women during menopause. This could avoid excessive weight gain because of the decline in physical activity that goes with age. Weight gain could also be contributed with the decline of estrogen in the body. Proper nutrition and exercise will greatly help you in dealing with menopause symptoms.
