Benefitting From Archery

There are many options available for athletes that want to adopt a solo sport as the activity of their choosing. These sports are designed to test to the abilities of the individual, leaving them solely responsible for the results that ensue.

This stands in direct contrast to more team based options, because any shortcomings that the individual may have can be compensated for with the skill set of a group of supportive people. Therefore, solo sports are inherently more challenging than team based ones, because they focus entirely on the individual pitting themselves against a challenge, usually involving their own past records or by physically pitting themselves against the elements and landscape.

Archery is a prime example of a solo sport that challenges the participant to better themselves, because of the inherent competition built into every aspect of it. All that matters in archery is accuracy, coordination, and strength, all of which prove to be complementary when it comes time to take the actual shot.

Archery is accomplished by having an athlete use the force of a bow to propel an arrow toward a target. There are several variations that exist, as the bow is also used for hunting and other recreational purposes; however, the sport will be the primary focus here.

Archery is one of the oldest sports in the world, harkening back to a time period where the bow was used for hunting for survival and for warfare, making accurate archers a prized and esteemed commodity. Competitions involving the use of the weapon for sport and prestige have existed for thousands of years, usually having the same general theme.

It is a simplistic concept that has its roots in history, with a simple premise for the competitions themselves. Whoever shoots the arrow closest to a given target wins, with several arrows being fired to determine an overall score.

Yet despite this apparent simplicity, there is a complexity to archery that makes it a dynamic and fresh experience. Athletes need to train with their bows for extended periods of time before they can compete, and everything from technique to equipment to weather conditions can affect the outcome.

Participants are expected to know and be able to account for these variables. A large part of the sport is reliant on the ability of the individual to read a situation and adapt efficiently to it.

There are many different types of bows, as well as a myriad of customization options available. Bows usually are found in either tensile or compound form, with the first option requiring the user to sustain the force needed to hold their arrow steady, and the second option having the engineering of the bow holding the strain while the participant aims.

Although archery can be a solo undertaking, the main motivation behind the activity is the concept of competition and pitting skills against other shooters on a range. Competition types range from the recreation friendly target match, to the high intensity competitions found all the way up to the Olympic level.

Archery provides a good range of physical benefits to the user. Firstly, it increases strength levels, due to the exertion that is required to bring a bow to full draw.

The repetition involved in shooting causes this strength increase, since the athlete may perform the act of firing an arrow hundreds of times in a session. Since most of the equipment is matched closely to the strength capacity of the individual, this means that a proportional amount of fatigue will occur as a result.

Next, the activity improves reflexes and coordination. The ability to be precise and efficient under a variety of conditions is not necessarily one that comes naturally to some people, but it can be instilled in them with time and practice.

Lastly, the activity is fun. There is a rare sense of gratification and achievement involved that can be readily quantified by examining the athlete's progress and accuracy over time.

Archery is an excellent selection for a hobby or sport to take up, because of the way that it naturally promotes strength, accuracy, timing, and coordination. It is an undertaking that is easy to understand and pick up, but highly difficult to fully master, making for a theoretical lifetime of application and practice.
