A great number of individuals go through plastic surgery procedures each year, and unfortunately many experience horror stories. Most of the blame is usually placed on the doctor, but patients who do not study up on their surgeon's credentials or communicate their needs should also feel responsible.

Some surgeons, especially those in other countries, are not as experienced or licensed as they appear or advertise themselves to be. Visits to these "professionals" have often ended up in injury, health problems, and even death.

No amount of caution or safety can prevent some patients from experiencing complications or perfect results; surgery itself is a risk, especially some of the procedures one undergoes for cosmetic purposes. However, it is definitely possible to avoid these kinds of hazards by preparing ahead of time and really making sure that you are getting the best work available.

One of the most important things to remember and make sure of is that your surgeon is board certified. The American Board of Plastic Surgery, or ABPS, has set specific standards that doctors must meet and live by if they want to practice safely.

Those that meet these standards have had training and experience, whereas those who do not probably have not. If someone is going to permanently alter the way that you look, whether it is on your body or face, you want them to have the best certification and knowledge possible.

As well as being certified, the board wants to ensure that all of those who have gone through certification maintain their education. You should also ask if your doctor is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons; being part of this elite group means that you keep up with education and new technology.

You may want to see photos of other procedures that they have performed that are similar to what you wish to have done. This will give you a better idea of the type of work they do and what other patients have ended up looking like.

If you see their portfolio and do not feel comfortable with their work, it is probably best to seek the help of another professional. You may wish to search for a specialist in the field concerning the fix you wish to have performed.

There are plenty of surgeons who specialize in cosmetic surgery and reconstruction, augmentation, or liposuction. Going with a professional that has performed more of the procedures that you want is a smart idea; they will have the experience necessary for you to trust them with your body.

Unfortunately, many individuals try to go cheap and take "plastic surgery vacations" to other countries. Though some do have great results, there have been thousands of others whose doctor was not as experienced or certified as they claimed.

Going to these feats for cheap plastic surgery is not worth it; your body may be damaged permanently because of a botched surgery, or you could even lose your life. It is best to do your research and search through the credentials of many other professionals here in the states that can help you.

Be cautious when you are deciding between doctors; those that are more conservative and wish to do the process more slowly are probably a better option. Though you want to see results quickly, sometimes it is a better idea to go in increments and make sure that you are healing and happy with the results.

Realize that, when it comes to this subject, less is almost always more. Do not push your doctor to take out more fat or give you larger implants than they believe is safe and natural.

If you try to go overboard, you may find that the results are not what you wanted. Your plastic surgeon will tell you beforehand the usual complications and risks associated with whatever you wish to have done.

Listen carefully, and make sure that you are ready and willing to take the risks. If you feel uncomfortable at all, then you should probably rethink having it done.

It is also important that you inform them of any health problems or complications that you have experienced before, especially when it comes to diseases and medications. Informing them of your harmful habits, like drinking or smoking, and making them aware of your medical history will be extremely vital.

Always be cautious and think surgeries through. If you do not, you could have irreparable damages to your body.
