Striving to Achieve Those Weight Loss Goals

Losing weight is a goal that many people throughout the United States share. While this is a worthy and attainable goal, it is much easier to state than to carry out.

Too many people start a new exercise regimen every New Year with goals of weight loss only to stop a few weeks later when they run into some obstacles.

These obstacles could be anything from the time demand to motivation to reach for their goal. There are many things you can do to overcome these hurtles that may stand in your way to achieving your goal of weight loss.

The first thing you may want to consider doing is using a buddy system. Support from friends and family when the going gets rough can be important and critical to the continuation of your efforts.

By exercising with a friend, you will have commitment to support him or her in his or her efforts as well. It will take a better excuse than "I'm tired" or "I do not feel like it today" to miss exercising with your friend.

Having someone to talk to while you exercise can also be very motivating to go and exercise. Many women feel cooped up in the home and like they do not get very much time to spend socially with friends.

Of course, this friend cannot be a simple acquaintance, but someone you are willing to struggle through pain with. However, you can become good friends through struggling together.

The second thing you will want to try to do is maintain a positive attitude about exercising. Discouragement because of lack of progress is one of the number one reasons that people stop striving for their fitness goals.

Optimism about exercising does not mean thinking "This does not really hurt at all!" or "This is my favorite activity during the day" when it is not true. It means that you believe in yourself, your abilities, and that you can achieve your goal.

It means recognizing that you are working towards your goals and that it is going to take some time. It is knowing that what you are doing is helping you, even if you are not seeing immediate results.

The third thing you need to do is be able to recognize when you are giving lame excuses and ignore them. The gym could be closed, you could be tired, your friend may not be able to come today, but you can still exercise.

When this happens you can use your own two legs to go out and get some fresh air. The change of scenery and activity can add spice back into your work out and it could be a unique and fun experience.

The fourth thing you need to do is make exercising a habit. It will be much easier to overcome lame excuses when exercising is a habit and your body expects to do it.

This does not mean that there will not be hard days or times when you do not want to exercise, but there do tend to be less of them. If exercising becomes a habit, you may keep it up even after you have achieved your weight loss goal.

Of course, your exercise and weight loss goals must also be realistic. If you set your goals too high, you will only get discouraged.

Achievement of smaller goals can add to your excitement that you are making improvements in your life and it can help you stay motivated to keep exercising. Weight loss goals should be set not higher than one or two pounds a week.

You should also realize that there may be times when you hit plateaus. When this happens, you need to increase the intensity of your work out so that your body has to work hard again.

Another thing that can help you lose weight is learning how to cope with stress. Often eating a snack is something that people do when they are stressed out.

It is a good idea to learn how to recognize when you are beginning to stress out and to start doing a relaxing activity to relieve your stress before you turn to the refrigerator. Elimination of stressful eating can help you achieve your weight loss goals sooner.

Unfortunately another temptation when you are trying to lose weight is to eat as little as possible and therefore depriving you of the nutrients that you need for a healthy life. However, this often leads to binging because you will become really hungry.
