Fighting Obesity When Pregnant

Obesity can threaten the health of your fetus if you are not careful. There are many birth defects that have been connected to obesity.

While pregnancy may seem like a good time to indulge in a second piece of chocolate cake or to give in and eat a piece of cheesecake because it will be hidden by your pregnant belly, this is not really the case. Many studies have begun to show that being overweight or gaining too much weight during pregnancy can result in birth defects.

These studies have consistently shown that mothers who are obese will tend to have more children with birth defects than a mother of a normal weight. The mothers involved in the study were also asked how much weight they gained during the pregnancy by comparing their before and after pregnancy weights.

Other demographical and medical information was also included in the study as there can be many factors relating to the development of a birth defect. Mothers who gained too much weight during pregnancy also tended to have babies that suffered from birth defects more often.

There were seven most common birth defects that were found to be associated with the obesity of the mother. The first birth defect is a condition called spina bifida.

Spina bifida is a condition when the developing fetus' spinal cord is developed incorrectly. The spinal cord is not properly covered up and therefore causes the child to have many different problems with walking and other forms of mobility.

The second most common birth defect was heart defects. Sometimes these defects can be repaired through surgery, but other times the doctor cannot do it.

The third most common birth defect is Hypospadias. Hypospadias is a disease which can cause malformed genitals.

The fourth most common birth defect is Anorectal atresia. Under this condition the anal is incorrectly formed.

The fifth most common birth defect is limb reduction defect. This is the condition a child is classified as when they are born missing a toe, finger, arm or legs.

Diaphragmatic hernia is the six most common birth defects. This condition is when there is an opening in the diaphragm that allows the abdominal organs to move into the chest cavity.

If this occurs, the lungs may end up becoming undeveloped at birth. The last most common birth defect is Omphalocele, which the intestines and other organs never fully entered the naval and you can still see them on the outside of the baby.

While the specific reason why obesity causes birth defects is still unknown, the studies have proved that there is a connection. These studies were performed both on animals and on humans.

Many believe that it may have something to do with glycemic control. There are many things that women can do to increase their chances of delivering a healthy baby even if they are overweight.

In some instances you may have to take medication to combat the effects. However, exercise and eating a healthy diet can definitely help your situation.

One of the most popular home exercise machines is the treadmill. It is very popular for many reasons including the fact that it allows you to avoid the bad weather, bad drivers, and paying the fees at the gym.

It is also very convenient and running is one of the best forms of exercise to help you lose weight in the least amount of time possible. If you have one of these machines, consider using it for a half an hour every day.

Later, in pregnancy you will not be able to run on the treadmill, but you will still be able to walk on it and it will help you. Pregnancy is not the right time to go on a severe diet.

You still need to eat enough to fuel your body so it can support the creation of another person. However, you should make sure that what you eat is healthy.

This will reduce your risk of other diseases related to obesity and it will provide your body with the vitamins that you need to create the baby. While vitamin-mineral supplements can help you with this, the supplements should not replace healthy food.

Healthy food will help you maintain a healthy weight. It is also best to eat small meals every couple of hours.

In addition to skipping junk food, you should not eat several other things including sushi, oysters, soft cheeses, and so forth. After you deliver the baby and when the doctor give the okay, you will be able to hit the treadmill and work towards losing those extra pounds that threatened your pregnancy.
